Greetings. Having several dragon kits on the build right now and I read on the web that in the german tanks the glass in the cupola and I presume drivers compartment were tinted green. Can anyone let me know if this is correct since I had not read about it before.
Thanks
Steve
Never read that anywhere… Doesn’t make much sense to me. Tinted periscopes would make it impossible to drive at night buttoned up… Can’t see much out of a periscope the way it is. Besides, German tankers and AFV crewmen were issued tinted goggles…
They might not actually be tinted (and I’ve never heard of this either) but, from the outside, they might look as if they’re tinted, due to internal reflection of the prisims in the periscopes. I’ve cetainly noticed this on German tanks at Bovington, but then they’re buttoned down, with the lights switched off.
See if you like the effect if you give the intenal part of the periscope a coat of Tamiya Smoke.
Cheers,
Chris.
Thanks for your answers. Thought it sounded a little strange but needed clarification. Thanks for setting me straight!
Also keep in mind that armored/ballistic glass used in things like the cupola rings or the driver’s viewing port were thick, usually 50mm or more, and that this thickness in turn gave them a slight greenish tint.
