Hello All…This is my first post as I just joined the forums yesterday. I have never seriously built a model prior to this, I just put kits together in my preteen years, so here I am 20+ years later trying to do it right. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could find pictures of the tank that Michael Wittman was driving during the Normandy invasion 1944. I think it was a Tiger and he was with the 101 Heavy. If someone could help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it. I must say that you all have a great site with wonderful information and what looks to be a bunch of friendly people. Thanks in advance.
Hi , Welcome to the forums. Do google search for Wittman and you will find a website from someone in the UK who has done a tremendous amount of research re: Wittman and his tank(s). If you can’t find it, post back on here and I will get the website address from work.
Welcome to the forums
you might find something here http://www.panzerace.net/main/intro.asp
this has been asked loads of times so you might fine something if you try a search
I tried a Google search and come up with a lot of info on the man, but just kept striking out with the equipment. Thank you for replies.
i meant a search on here but use the advance option and chane the date of its start date
Have you looked into Achtung Panzer? I have a couplemore that I can’t look up right nowAlthough me thinks AP will suffice. I’ll check back.
I’m pretty sure I tried it. I have so many sites bookmarked right now it is just slightly overwhelming. Also, can someone tell me what kind of Tiger he drove? I think I am just trying to save myself some headaches. I have a similar question on the aircraft forum having to do with WWII aces. Thanks for all of the help
Wittmanns Tiger in normandy was 205 but all his imfamous encounters he borrowed someone elses Tiger
if you wait for the late tiger 1 from Dragon it comes with everything to make Wittmanns Borrowed 007 command tiger
Tamiyas late tiger kit comes with 007 decals but you will need to get the command update for it
Tamiyas Early tiger comes with Wittmann decals for the kill rings on the barrel for early in the war
Tamiya do an Otto Carius Tiger kit (he had alot more kills than Wittmann)
Wittmann tanks are fun to find stuff on there is alot of pics of him but not many of him with a tank. if you want Normandy stuff i have used this site http://www.angelfire.com/al4/mldgbox/ they have most the #'s off of tanks in the LAH. also 1 note for you if you want to do more of his stuff care of pics they have with him and tanks the famous pic with him and his crew standing in front of a tiger after he got his cross is not his real tiger that is done just for pictures.
How are Dragon kits? Do they have individual track links or are they molded in longer pieces? Since this is going to be one of the first pieces of armor that I attempt, I would like to try and keep it as simple as possible, less chance of making a big goof. Also, slight change of subject. I ran a search on M. Wittman on the site and read part of a thread about how his Tiger was destroyed in Normandy…it seems like the common consensus(sp?) was with a Firefly…has any read Panzer Commander by Hans Von Luck, he states that it was with rockets from a Typhoon.
Also I currently have a Panther Ausf. G, any input on what would be a good unit to model it after? I am open to any and all suggestions.
Go to the links given for history. But I’ll help you out a little more. Wittman used a late production Tiger-1 in Normandy number 205 At Villers-Bocage the battle he is so famous for he used Kurt Sowa tiger 222 because his tiger was broke down. Now the next Tiger Wittman used was his last it was tiger 007 he was killed in this tiger. Nobodys really sure if it was from a Typhoon are from a Firefly.
Once again, I would like to thank all of you for your patience and your help. Now I just have to make a decision on if I should do the Normandy Panzer or something from the Eastern Front
Hello Blackhawk 91,Michael wittmanns official mount was red 205(Tiger 1 with steel wheels). At Villers Bocage ,he borrowed tiger red 222 from Uscha. Kurt Sowa, this steel wheeled Tiger was destroyed later at stavelot.Wittmann died in Tiger white 007, this steel wheeled model was probably a 3
rd company staff vehicle. The remains of Wittmann lay undiscovered until March 1983,he and his crew were reburied at La Cambe[8D]
[:-^]I think I just said that. Well his Tigers on the Eastern front where 1331at kursk after kursk it was S21.The the picture of him and his crew getting the knight cross in the snow was not his tiger it was Oscha. Krohn. That Tiger was S04
The only Tiger I that Dragon currently has out (if you can find it) is the Initial production 3 in 1 kit. Not one that will help you for a Whittman mount. It does comes with individual link tracks, but they are so big and “beefy” you shouldn’t have too much trouble with them. They are releasing, later this month —maybe—) a late production 3 in 1 kit. I’m not sure if they will have indy links or one piece tracks. Virtually all other Dragon kits (exceptions being the M4A2 Red Army Sherman and the Tiger (P), I believe) have indy links. Most are not too bad, they just take a little care and patience. The tracks for the Shermans are really difficult to do. I buy after market tracks for them.
Tamiya’s Tigers mostly have one piece, vinyl tracks. I think their Late Production is the exception here with that kit having indy links, again, not too bad to assemble.
Hope this helps. Welcome to the forum and, especially, the dark side!!
