Gidday fellas, I want to do a diorama of pzkpfw 4’s and stug 4’s refuelling and need to know where the fuel cap is on the pk4 family.Any help would be appreciated.
The fuel fillers are those two flaps located to the rear of the second and third return roller mounts on the left hand side.
isnt that a pain
you pull your panzer up to the Petrol station (or Gass Station) and the pumps on the wrong side
thanks ukgeoff i allways thought it was the one on the back plate
If you mean the small access hatch on the upper right hand side, I belive that is to allow the drive to the cooling fans to be disconected prior to opening the hatch on the engine deck. However, if you mean the raised section on the engine deck, that I belive is for the radiator (but I could be wrong about that).
actually the fuel cap is on the rear of the tank… you can see it above the exhaust for the Turret motors… it’s on the right hand sige about 1/4 of the way in… Here is a picture for you… This is a Panzer IV Ausf. H If you look to the tank just before that one, you can see a fuel drum. The book says they are refeulling… This is Squadron’s book on the Pnz. IV
You must have a different copy of that book. The caption in my copy makes no mention of them refueling. I’d like to direct your attention to the photo at the bottom of this page http://tankomania.com/data/e/29f8.html of a PzIV undergoing engine repair, The whole upper plate has been removed and shows no sign of pipe work but does show the fan drive I refered to in my earlier post. BTW, the fuel tanks on the PzIV were located in the fighting compartment, under the turret cage.
well man, it’s no suprise that you can’t see piping… sorry, but that picture shows them putting an enging in there, yeah there are fans, but how you can see an access to shut the fans down is astounding to me… I’m assuimg you are talking about this picture?
if so, I don’t see that at all!
Hi Sniper…if you haven’t already purchased a Pz. Kpfw. IV kit, you might want to hold off and get the new DML kit. CDNTanker25 just posted some info and links to the new kit. Here’s the thread…

…and the links…

The reason I mention it is because it comes with a fuel filler hatch which can be built open or closed. Here’s a pic…
Hummm…it sure looks like Dragon put the fuel fillers where ukgeoff mentioned, on the left side behind the track.
Good luck with it…sounds like a great idea for a dio…
thanks for the info colo- artist,it sure looks like a great kit.I wonder when it will get to us in australia (hopefully by xmas)and what the cost will be.(probaly around $80-$100 dollars aust)
Hey again Sniper,
It’s been a bit since your original post, but I just noticed a picture you might find interesting…
The caption reads, “The crew of a Panzer IV from the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Panzer Regiment, busy refuelling. To do the job the men had to remove one of the side “skirts”. The large-toothed rail can be seen on which these 5 mm thick side protection plates were hung. The marking “4L” indicated the fourth plate on the left side.”
It’s from a page about the Normandy invasion. The page has great photos and good summaries of what happened during the invasion…

It’s part 2. The first part is here…

I guess it takes four men to fill a Panzer…one to pour, one to hold the funnel, one to hold the hose, and one to watch. Humm…maybe five in this case, another one to take the picture.
Take care.
alright, I stand corrected! Thanks Colo-artist for clearing that up! When I’m wrong I’m worng, I’ll admit it heh… That’s a great site man, thanks for sharing
Hi James,
Hey, as the saying goes, “what happens in FineScale forums, stays in FineScale forums.” I ain’t tellin’ nobody.
Thanks for the infomation and discussion. Now a new Query; Was it the same in all panzer 4 type vechicles?.In the nashorn after they moved the engine forward to the centre of the vechicle were the fuel tanks left in the same spot? (ie Under the engines???)
