Panel lines and paint on my spitfire

I’m almost done with my 1/48 spitfire IXc from hasegawa. Several things I’ve learned on this kit:

  1. Panel lines can disappear quickly under several layers of primer, camo, future, etc…I think next time I try the salting technique for weathering I’m going to prime the model with some sort of metallic color so I can skip the gray primer. I tried MM aluminum of some sort but it did not go down well on the finish. It beaded up something weird and looked really messed up. blah blah my question is, does anyone make acrylic metallic airbrush paint, and do you think it would work for a primer? Has anyone tried NMF as a primer for the salting technique?
  2. I used MM enamels for the camoflage scheme. This has pros and cons. First of all, the pro is that if I had to strip the future off the top of the camo, I wasn’t worried about taking camo off. Has anyone ever had base color come off while using acrylics if they had to strip future off?
  3. The future coats didn’t go down well at all. Has anyone skipped the future when using MM enamels? they seem semi gloss and I bet the decals will go on ok without the future.
  4. If I stick with enamels I may try this sequence next time.
    –acrylic metallic/NMF primer
    –salt vs. no salt
    –camo or other base color
    –decals/wash
    –top dull coat
I may skip the Future altogether when using enamels on the next kit if this works out.
  5. This may be a possible sequence for using acrylic base color
    –metallic primer
    –salt vs. no salt
    –camo or other base color
    –future
    –decals and wash
    –future
    –dull coat

The whole point of this diatribe is to try to reduce the number of coats I put on each model because I’ve really obscured the panel lines on this job. That’s too bad, because hasegawa has provided a very detailed kit. Do other people think that enamels obscure panel lines more than acrylics? Anyhoo I’ll post pix in about a week when I’m done with it. Thanks for listening and I’m hoping some of you gurus out there can help me streamline my finishing steps. Thanks for any advice.

Well the reason you prolly had a hard time is that you’ve got the same issue i do. You put the paint on toooooo thick. You’ve just got to barely cover what you are painting. hope that helps. Spits are gorgeous planes!

Putting decals over flat enamels will likely result in silvering. Sounds as though you just sprayed way too heavily. I would suggest Alclad2 for your metallic paint.
