Hello everybody!
I have seen some of you guys paint the tools (like showels, axes etc.) added to softskins and tanks so that they look really realistic. Could someone please tell me or tip me on which colours to use for a base and what you do to make them look dirty and rusty? I keep trying but i am never satisfied with the results i am getting. These small details really help in making the models look more realistic but if they look bad they really drag the model down… Appreciate any suggestions Thanx!

One thing I do on pickaxes and shovels is to rough up the handle to simulate wood, then I paint them with Tamiya’s XF-64 (Red Brown) and then the implement end usually XF-16 (Flat Aluminum)… chip away some of it, and rub some of my fiancee’s old makeup to color them… not the really cool blue eyeshadow, but some of the darker reds/browns… makes realistic looking rust (and mud) and it’s free… and that’s good enough for me…
Here’s the technique on an OLD Academy Panzer from the 1970s that I did in 2002…

Another pair from the 1971 Tamiya Sd.KfZ 223 Radio Car…haven’t dull coated it yet…
