Any tips on this, the black paint bled under the masking tape and ruined my nice yellow tips.
I Airbrush the propeller blade tips yellow about a 1/2inch and then i mask off the tip with Tamiya tape its best tape out there for masking, and then paint the props your perferd color. Make shure you burnish the tape down real good so you dont get any bleed through. Hope that helps.
I spray black or whatever propeller color you are using on the masked tips to seal the tape up and prevent the paint from creeping under. Some people use clear for this as well. Then I spray a white base then yellow. Works like a charm.
i draw an outline of the blade then i take the blade away and draw a straight line were i think the line should be of course it’s a lot longer than the blade is wide, then i line the blade up in the outline and just freehand the paint and keep doing that for all the blades let it dry flip over and repeat. it works for me,best off all it’s not very time consuming i think it took me around 20 mins to paint all the blades on my b-29 both sides so thats my two cents hoped it helps[^]
Neudog,
Kia Ora…the best wat to prevent paint creep under masking is to thin the paint more than you normally would and only allow a very tiny amount of paint to be sprayed at a time - effectively “dusting” the paint onto the prop, and use this method to build up the color depth with many light coats - in stead of one fat, wet coat that can possibly bleed under the mask.
Then I nail it with a quick wet coat once the color depth is where I want it.
I also find that painting this way keeps the paint thickness to the bare minimum - you don’t want a “step” between colors.
Never fails, mate.
I do the same as above… Works beautifully. Just use VERY thin coats of white and yellow, building up the color depth.
Masking the yellow tips and spraying black over was too hard, the masking tape kept coming off the tips…
I paint the tips yellow, then I paint the prop black, then I paint the tips yellow again, then I paint the prop black again, then I paint the tips yellow again, then I paint the prop black again, then I utter obsenities and blame the kit manufacturer, and give up.
Thanks for the tips above. Maybe I’ll have better luck now
Paint the yellow tip, let dry and mask. Paint yellow again to seal the mask, thus paint black.
Use an eyedropper to transfer a drop of yellow paint to a Rolling Rock bottle cap. Dip the blade tip of the already painted black propeller into the drop to the appropriate depth.
Suspend propeller with painted blade tip hanging down until dry.
Repeat with remaining blade tips.

Painting prop tips is a pain in the butt. I paint the blades the appropriate colour then apply squares of yellow decal, allow to dry, then use 600 grit sandpaper to remove the excess. A few very light strokes perpendicular to the blade works great.
It’s quick easy and clean.

I usually paint the blades overall black, then mask off the tips with scotch tape (works fine for me), seal the masks with a coat of future, apply a light gray acrylic primer, and then paint the yellow- works every time.
If it is just the tips and it is one color, I just dip them. Hasn’t failed me yet, you do have to have a steady hand so that you don’t touch the sides of the paint jar…
