Painting PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)?

Lipton Tea sells roughly a dozen varieties of teas, packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) mesh tetrahedra. I happen to be quite fond of their Black Pearl®, so there’s a nearly interminable supply of this stuff, 4×1.5 inch, as much as one would care to harvest.

I’d like to use this bounty (I’m thinking cargo netting in 1:144), but part of the reason Lipton uses PET is that it doesn’t react to BOILING WATER. (This is the same clear/milky stuff as soda bottles.)

Does any body have any ideas how to get this plastic to take color?

What, if any, paints have you tried? I don’t have an answer (as usual), some more information may help others much more expert than I assist you.

Emily Litella moment! I’d used acrylics, Tamiya, Mr. Color, etc., (which end up blotchy and vague) because I was using acrylics for other stuff. Your question made me think: ACRYLICS! I’m staining water-proof PET with water-based color. DUH! I tried using one of my base-paints (LACQUER) and now I’ve got a nice khaki sample.

Clothing dye should work too.
