I’ve got limited experience with putty use. I’m building a Renwal ship, which I’ve puttied some flaws with the 3M one step red bondo. No worries there. After sanding and smoothing then to paint. Some trial runs on scraps with flat white primer indicate slight difference in appearance of putty vs plastic, unless more coats applied. Is it recommended to use a clear coat or sealer over puttied surfaces before primer. What, if so.?
Good question. I’ve never seen it recommened,I never used Bondo either, just Perfect Putty. Sand, prime and paint. If there’s a definitive answer you’ll get it here.
Hi,
I think I’ve been using either Mr. Surfacer or Mr. Primer lately (it comes in a square bottle in either white or grey). I can check when I get home tonight.
Other than that, I will often also apply a coat of sanding sealer above where I have placed putty and the where the putty and plastice meet, and then later sand it smooth after the sealer dries. Unfortunately that approach may not be all that suitable, if you are working on a model with alot of surface detail. It also may help to try and use putty relatively closer in color to the plastic that you are working on. As such I will try and use Squadron Green Putty on darker colors, and Squadron White Putty or Perfect Putty on lighter colored plastic.

Was the bondo sanded flush with surface you tested on? I only had this problem when I didn’t have the bondo sanded flush with the surface I put it on.
When you shoot the primer, try a light coat just over the putty and sanded area, then another coat or coats overall. As a body/paint tech, I’d shy away from a clear first. While it will seal the more porus putty, unless you scuff it well, I think it will cause you a peeling problem later when you paint/mast over the area.
Hi,
I typically do all my priming by brush and the name of the stuff I use is called “Mr Surface Primer”. It comes in a 40ml square bottle, in white or gray.
