Painting Mig-3 Engine Block

This is my first post at this board so first of all welcome everybody. I love these kinds of discussion boards for all kinds of subjects; you will not get better “technical support” enywhere alse. Good idea, FSM staff.

Now, here’s my question.

The ICM Mig-3 (and some other planes from this manufacturer) have their engines available for exposing with the hood open.

What metallic enamels would you use to paint, shadow and highlight the engine?

I’m a painting newbie as you can imagine but I’m all set up as far as tools, airbrush, compressor, etc.

13 people have read the post but nobody’s ever painted/weathered a scale piston engine. I feel like a freak.

Hello MonsterZero, Welcome to the Forums.

I haven’t done this exact kit but I would assume the block color was grey or some other boring color, certainly not Olds Gold. Once the base coat was done I would use black for a wash and drybrush with "steel or “aluminum” for the highlights.
In the side bae under “The Magazine” there is a “feature stories” link which should take you to articles on washing and drybrushing if you aren’t familiar with them. You can also use the search function located in the gold bar above the forum “tree”.

If you need more help just ask.

MonsterZero…

I have built the ICM MiG-3…a good kit although the wings were quite a mess to assemble…

As far as the engine goes, I painted the exhausts rust, the two top tanks aluminum, the engine itself a flat black…and the front radiator a drab green… don’t remember where I got the color references…they weren’t in the instructions??
