painting checkerboard pattern

subject line says it all. does anyone have the 1994 Finescale issue of Modelling the Second World War? i am looking for the article that explains how to paint checkerbord pattern on cowlings. if so, would they be so kind as to email me this article. yeah i know it would be much easier to purchase the decal(s) for this pattern…but i like to do it the hard way

my email: gharlaneATcomcast.net you kno what to do with the AT

any and all info on this matter would be greatly appreciated

I’ve done checker boards on cowlings (P-47 & P-51) and the process is tedious to say the lease even on 1:48 scale! I used Tamiya tape, which I laid on glass to mark reference marks before applying the tape 90 degrees to the first layer. Once I had that done I carefully lifted the mask off the glass and placed it on the cowling. As I did, I cut the tape so as to leave the areas I was going to paint black (applied over a white base). Working the masking tape to contour to the shape of the cowl until I had it completely masked as needed. TEDIOUS! A few mistakes were made that required touch up afterwards. Now I opt for using decals!
