hey all… a while ago i test sprayed a junk kit with some automotive paints i had laying around… now im trying to strip this paint off using a very strong mix of caustic soda ( the stuff thats in oven cleaner) to strip it and its not coming off…
now im wondering if the paint is not being stripped off coz it crazed the plastic??
What kind of paint was it?
It may have chemically bonded to the plastic as you mentioned.
Have you tried scrubbing it with an old toothbrush while it is in the soda?
yep, ive scrubbed it a few times and it doesnt budge… the paint i used was australian export gloss enamel (el cheapo brand)… it says to clean up with mineral turps…to think of it its been in there for over a week… i think thats it, that its bonded to the plastic…
and ive used flat paints of the same brand, and it doesnt seem to craze the plastic and comes off real easy, where as the gloss ver seemed to craze the plastic and doesnt come off at all… strange…
hey mike… the parts were soaked for a long time, now im trying brake fluid, but it doesnt look like its gonna budge… i did a lil test to see if there was a difference between the flat and glosses, so i sprayed a few diff colours on some sprue, let it cure overnight, then soaked it in the caustic soda overnight, and none of them have come off… would it be a safe assuption to say that there not coming off coz they crazed the plastic and bonded with it. aslo do u think that that is a good general test to see if pints craze the plastic?? because when i sprayed the flats i got a beautiful finish (after that i though it was ok for plastic…), and when i sprayed gloss it looked wierd, and felt tacky long after i painted it.
I think you need to find some Castrol Super Clean as it sounds like that caustic soda isn’t doing very well. [;)]
It’s hard to say why that paint won’t budge as I have never had any not come off with Castrol Super Clean.
yeah i dont really like using caustic soda , it burns!! i went looking for some CSC but couldnt find anyhere in oz, but i saw a degreaser that was non toxic and biodegradable and this made me think of CSC. mike do u know if any degreaser will strip paint?
Yes, some degreaser’s will strip paint, such as CSC, Simple Green and others.
Do you have Easy-Off oven cleaner in Oz?
It works well for stripping paint.
