Paint scheme and decals for SBD Dauntless

Hello,

My next project is the 1/48 SBD Dauntless from Revell. The kit I got come with two paint variant one dutch and one USN from Guadalcanal (grey).

I have the book from Squadron Signal but I can’t find any information about this camo. Any information are welcome.

That kit has a mix of features from different SBD versions. But for camo it can be in either the Blue Gray over Light Gray, or the Tri Color of Sea Blue top sides, intermediate blue sides and white lower surfaces.

The Detail and Scale book on the SBD has pictures of the aircraft in overall gray.

The overall gray scheme was worn for a short time in1941. It wasdirected to be replaced with BlueGray over LightGray in Ocober 1941. It was mainly worn on SBD-1s (all USMC) and SBD-2s.

I did look into this book and found some information but couldn’t find anything about the decals provided by Revell for this aircraft.

Look like to me that Revell totally invented this aircraft decals and I can’t find anything in 1/48 for the SBD except yellow wing which have before WW2 decals.

I think this is what you’re looking for. USS Wasp served for awhile in the Med in mid 1942 before being sent to the Pacific to participate in the Guadalcanal operations. In the Med, a yellow surround was added to the national insignia as part of theater recognition markings. These were painted out, and not neatly, when she arrived in the Pacific. This photo was taken on the day of the landings at Guadalcanal on board USS Wasp.

That is exactly what I was looking for (The aircraft in the middle). Though, I though the yellow ring was only on the fusellage so if it was erase badly why it does look similar on the wing.

Anyway any more picture of it?

That was the only pic I was able to find. It is possible that some aircraft had the yellow surround added on the wing. Especially when one considers that the SBD was not familiar to most Allied forces operating in the Med.

black and white picture? [:D]

Grrr… stupid forum never post right…then does something else when I do exactly what I did the first time…[:P]
