About to start painting my Panther and as the camouflage scheme I’ll be using isnt a kit one (or standard for that matter) I need to find out the paint I need for the undercoat as it shows through in this scheme.
If possible number in Gunze sangyo or tamiya acrylics please (as most of my paints are these otherwise I’ll just convert things)
Unfortunately, availability of Vallejo is rather limited here in Australia. If I can’t find them here in Sydney, I don’t think Andrew has much chance in Tasmania. If I want Vallejo, I usually have to order from Lucky<odel in HK.[:@]
I guess I’ve been lucky so far, as I know there are some Australian hobby shops which will not ship paint by mail.
My entire stock of Vallejo (approx 50 bottles) has come from LM, though not all at once - usually in 4-6 at a time as I needed them. I’ve also had Gunze, Gaianotes and a jar of Mr Color Thinner by airmail, so I am probably pushing my luck. [;)]
Air mail shipping from LuckyModel usually arrives here about 7 days from the day they ship. Single-jar shipping rates are painful, but don’t increase significantly when you order multiple jars. (eg. $2.20 USD for a single jar of Vallejo, but this does not increase at $2.20 per jar - foir 6 jars, shipping is $5.46 USD)
PS: At least one package of Vallejo paints was opened for inspection by Customs and allowed to pass. I’d presume that all the others would have been subject to X-Ray inspection.
Single price inc shipping is about 20c more than my not so local hobby shop (tamiya acrylic) , the closer one I refuse to look at due to stupidly high markup ($25 for a tube of tamiya putty ROFLMAO).
I might try some Vallejo next time I put an order at lucky model in see what the fuss is about.
As lexbenz says Vallejo Cavalry Brown is an exact shade match for the german primer colour used on their tanks throughout the war. I was fortunate enough to have access to original paint chips from the period thanks to a friend in hamburg and was able to match this colour to the original chip while was researching colours for the trumpeter 1/16 full interior tiger II and Italeris’ Schnellboot.
You can use Vallejo from the bottle but I would advise adding a bit of water and mixing it down so thatt it goes further. The paint is happy to do this without much of a loss to colour strength and has a good coverage. Also make sure you give the bottle a really good shake up for a while before use - and make sure tha cap is on tight!!!
You can mix Vallejo paints together with no problems or issues and can be thinned down with bog standard tap water. They have a rich strong pigment and are easy to work with. I love my Vallejo paints.
As I have already said, The one you want is Cavalry Brown
Vallejo is best thinned with distilled water. Don’t try to thin Vallejo with alcohol. You’ll get a crappy glob of goo. Personally, I add a drop of dishwashing detergent to help with the flow and possible clogs when spraying.
Just my two cents–again, I say stop worrying about “EXACT” color matches. Your weathering will change the shade anyway, and you might find that once you weather the tank it won’t look “correct”.
Learn to mix your own from domestically-available paint sources and you’ll never get extorted by ridiculous prices again. Really, it’s not rocket science.
Great more stuff for the missus to laugh at me for. I already have oven clean (for paint stripping), Future floor wax (for sealing coats), windex (to clean up future), nailpolish remover (for CA clean up), candles lighters & matches (for streching sprue etc) toothbrushes (for lots), clothes pegs (for mini clamps etc) and probably more that shes joked about on my shelves more than once .(And yesI keep a better oven cleaner supply than the kitchen does LOL)
As I did for the green on this build (I didnt have the ‘right’ colour in acrylics and didnt want to mess with enamels tonight). I wanted to know approx what I needed to begin with cause as far as I knew it could of been anything from blood red to near black to pink. In hindsight I should of known, the german name being rotoxide (IIRC). But it didnt click till I was typing this.
If you have paypal, I can ship you some Vallejos if you need them? My hobby shop has them in stock regularly and the post office does flat rate shipping no matter how many are in the box so it would be pretty easy if it’s something you need?
Not only did weathering alter the shade, but slight tone variation was possible in German paint lots. I use Creamcote craft acrylic red oxide paint from Hobby Lobby. The bottle was .87 and I have paint for years to come.
