P-51D experts, I have a new question - landing gears

I can’t believe the incredible information that’s come out on this plane.

so for my 2 cents,i have a photo in an old Air Classics magazine and it doesn’t

appear that Petie 2nd has an aerial. Sorry to take so long ,work thing.

Thank you GIANTS,

Frank

Thanks for the extra info, John [tup]

Having not seen any mechanisms up-close, I can only theorize as to how it maintains it’s tension.

Because there isn’t a great change in the angle of the canopy from the open to close position, there’s probably not much of a change in the tension itself. I’m guessing that there is a roller system of sorts on the canopy pass-through. After it passes through the canopy, there is probably a spring tensioner attached to the armor backplate behind the seat. When the canopy opens, the tension on the aerial increases and the spring extends, allowing the aerial to stretch without increased tension. Then when the caopy closes, the spring retracts and maintains the tension on the aerial.

But that’s just my theory and I could be 100% wrong.

Personally, I’m kind of glad that there’s no aerial, because I really didn’t feel like drilling through the canopy [(-D].

kinda like it has a arm that lays horizontal, open the canopy and the little extra slack allows the arm to lower. close the canopy and it takes up the slack and pulls the arm back up. makes sence to me too, but we’re probably both wrong

Good guess Fred. Hope the pic opens or I’ll look stupid[V]
