P-51D Bad Moon

This is the Monogram P-51d I built for the “Monogram Mafia” Group build. The kit builds very nice, and the only additions I made was was a True Details pilot seat and some wire brake lines. The model is finished in foil and hand painted. The model represents no real Mustang, I made the markings and name up.

as always, comments are welcome!

That is one interesting paint scheme Owl… I love the green. What color is it? It almost looks like Zinc Chromate.

thanks, hercmech. The green is from the 1/4 oz Testors enamel jar: flat green. Various amounts of white helped with the fading.

I gotta admit,I really like the overall scheme.

interesting build.

Overall I like it, sometthing differant. One thing I dont like though is how you did the markings on the starboard side of the aircraft. They dont match the port side, you IZ - M on the left and IM - Z on the right.

the decal sheet never shows the other side when doing the letters, so I have never known what each side is supposed to look like relative to each other. So I just made it say “ZIM” whichever way you look at it. It was intentional.

lol, I love it. [:D]

Never see a green scheme like that. Nicely done.

We model for ourselves. And bravo for hand painting it.

First off, Outstanding work!!

Second, a minor pet peeve of mine: for the amound of wear and tear on the plane, that prop is just waaaay too “new”. The prop just doesn’t fit with the plane. (Don’t worry too much on this, nearly everyone does it.) Now, I don’t know about aircraft maintainence rules during WWII, but nowadays, unless the props are severly damaged, they are not replaced, and they tend to show it. The edges of the prop blades are worn to bare silver metal (if metal) or yellow (if composite material–not applicable here), and the backside of the prop’s blade tips are worn to silver, but (nowadays) are given a quick swipe of black paint to prevent glare blinding the pilot.

Keep up the great work–next time I’m on the flightline, I’ll get pics of well-used props for ya, so you can see what I mean.

the prop is weathered, kinda heavily too. I guess I just didn’t grab the pictures that showed the best! Does this help out? If you look at the edges, especially on the second one, you will see the missing paint.
