P-43 Lancer & Martin Baltimore questions

I have a number of questions I need answers to, but I am realist enough to know I will probably not find those answers, but you never know, I might get lucky. So here goes:

Lancer:

  1. The cockpit photo’s I have I believe are from the YP-43, and show only a lap belt. Would this have been the same for production aircraft, or would they have received a full harness?

  2. I know Seversky/Republic used yellow chromate primer, but what colour did they use for the cockpit interior? IPMS Camouflage & Markings - Interior Colours of US Aircraft, 1941-45 Part 1 states that Grumman and Republic seem to have used Bronze Green extensively. Unfortunately I cannot tell from the photo’s which interior colour is best to go with.

  3. It seems it was not unknown for American aircraft received by the RAAF, when their undersides were repainted, to have their wheel wells sprayed the same colour, and in a couple of cases, the undercarriage too. Any idea if this happened to any of the RAAF Lancers?

  4. What colour was the inside of the flaps painted?

Martin Baltimore:

I have a very good book on the Baltimore (though why it takes the Poles to produce one???) with fantastic interior photo’s, but the colour used looks rather dark. What colour primer and interior colour did Martin use on their aircraft?

Like I said, not the easiest questions to find answers to, but here’s hoping!

Can’t help re the Lancer, but here’s a query similar to yours on another forum that you may find helpful:

Martin

Cheers

Thanks Greg, that was really useful, especially as I have a Maryland in the stack too!

I believe the US was a bit behind in adopting shoulder straps. I hear even earliest F4Fs did not have them. They seem to have been adopted by US in late thirties and early forties.

The earlier SBD’s did not have them.

The Classic Airframes kit?

Thanks guys. Lap belts it is then.

Baron, the Baltimore is Classic Airframes, but the Maryland is Special Hobby (both 1/48).

Ooh, I look forward to seeing your builds those, too, when you get started on them! They’re on my hunt list on eBay. I’d like to finish them in what-if USAAF markings.

The plan is to do the Maryland in French camo with British markings as “Warby” Warburton’s aircraft flying out of Malta, and the Baltimore as a 454 Sqn RAAF aircraft flying out of Egypt with grey topsides and white underneath
