P-39 .30 cal. wing guns

In some of my references, these appear shrouded, in others, not. Does anyone know which practice was more common? Or am I seeing protective covers in some photos and not in others?

Thanks for any help!

If I am not mistaken, I think what you are seeing are gun pods that were added to some variants of the Airacobra. The variants that you cannot see the “covers”, do not have the gun pods attached because those variants had 2 or 3 .30 cal. Brownings in the wings along with the cannon through the hub and the 2 .50s mounted in the cowling.

I hope this helps IF, this is what you are seeing.

No, sorry, I was asking about the .30 cal. guns, not the pods on some models (which held .50 cal., IIRC). A .30 is fairly small, with a barrel diameter at the muzzle of less than an inch. But in some of the photos, there appears to be either a shroud or a dust cover over the barrel. I suspect that this is, indeed, a detachable cover, rather than a barrel shroud, but none of the photos in my references are clear enough to tell.

Ahha!! I see!!! A flash suppressor, maybe???

Looks odd for a flash surpressor…[%-)]

Maybe I’ll just commit a “cardinal sin” and look at what others have done! (If you recall the most recent furball in the forums…) [:I]

I looked through all my refs and did nto see a clear pic of what you may be referring to. I am not aware of blast tubes etc being on the wing .30s.

Thanks for trying!

I got a response from Pixilator on another forum. There are no shrouds or blast tubes on the .30 cal. wing guns. What I’m finding in my references appear to be dust or debris covers. As the model will be posed in flight, I won’t be adding them.

Thanks again!
