overhead tinting?

What is the best way to create the clear green overhead tinting on the windows above the pilots on 1/48 helo models?

In my early days of modeling, I tried brushing on thinned Testor’s “Beret Green” , but it left brush streaks and looked weird–fluorescent green. Do I dare airbrush it???

Tamya makes a clear green that works well. They have several colors in the clear paints so you may want to mix to tone the green down a bit.

I wonder if one could mix a few drops of green in clearcoat to make the green tint?

I have used clothes dye and it worked out well.

I use the Tamiya ‘clear’ colors, including the green for Hueys. Remember, the overheads are not tinted on Black Hawks, they are clear … regardless of what the instructions say. I’ve had great success airbrushing them on which guarantees no brush marks. I also use the amber and reds for tail lights and brake lights on armor and the red is also great on helicopter rotating beacons. Hope this helps. Good luck,
Paul

Thanks to all for the input! Greatly appreciated!

I believe Gunze Sangyo also makes a clear green.

I seem to recall an article in FSM about 3 or 4 years ago about a guy puting the blue tinting at the top of the windshield on a car maodel. The result looked great but I can’t remember what he did to achieve it.

With any luck at all, that article may be archived on this site somewhere.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember the same article. I think he used 'Metalic Blue" and was careful not to shake or stir the paint. If my failing memory serves me, he just used the tinted thinner at the top of the bottle. I have tried this with a green before but the clear colors from Tamiya give much better results.

I’ve got that article. If you send me your snail mail, I’ll send it out.

I’ve place a few drops of green food coloring in future then dip the part. It works well and looks great.

I’ve done the same on Hueys and Skyraiders. Haven’t had any problems yet, and one kit on my bench is going on 28 years old now. Hope this helps. -Ed

I recently spottet clear glass paint at a local artsy-craftsy shop and I´m pretty anxious to try that…

Huey Medic 42 (or anybody else), the technique of putting green food coloring drops in Future–sounds easy, but waht about the windscreens that are all one piece?? Example–Revell’s 1/48 CH-53–the windscreen, overheads and chin windows are all the same piece o’ clear plastic. Would you recommend masking, then dipping? OR would you recommend BRUSHING the colored Future on the overheads???

Green Food coloring and future works.

Eat, Crap or get out of my way.
