Otto Carious Turret Numbers , Black or White?

I am building Tamiyas Otto Carious’s Mid Production Tiger 1. The box art and Decals show white turret numbers 217 being used. I have a picture of his mid production tiger and the photo has black turret numbers. Which is correct? I would like to use dry transfers but Archer dosen’t have the correct size or type turret numbers. Who else might make dry transfers that would work?

Are you reffering to this pic?

I think the turret numbers are red. This was his Winter camo, so obviously he had to get rid of his white numbers. Not sure of any other dry transfer makers. Mabey there is a way you cant paint the decal and then put it on?

Yes that is the photo. Why do you think the numbers might be red? All of the turret numbers I have seen from his company heve been dark so I am confused with Tamiya’s white numbers. The assumption I have is that Tamiya got the information from Otto Carious but I could well be wrong.

Well the tank is seen here in all white winter wash camo. Obviously with the white camo, he had to get rid of the white numbers. I am not exactly sure if His panzer abteilung painted their numbers red or black in the Winter. I know that several units did paint them red. I’ll see I f I can find any infor on that.

If you wanted to just do his tank in the summer or something, then I would leave the White numbers on and spray the model dark yellow. I’ll do look for some info.

According to “Tigers in combat Vol. 1” By Wolfgang Schneider the turret numbers of 2nd company were black.

According to “Tiger I on the eastern front” By Jean Restayn the turret numbers of 2nd company were black.

I don’t recall Otto Carius mentioning anything about the color of turret numbers in “Tigers in the mud”. From the black and white photos its impossible to tell wether the numbers are red or black, but since two different sources says black, thats the color I would go for.

the numbers were black not red think only some ss units had red numbers

nope, 3rd company of s.Pz.Abt. 502 used red numbers for a while. and so did 1st company … just not 2nd company.
501 also used red numbers. so did 504 and 506.

oops my bad

Tiger tanks are a jungle … impossible to remember everything. I had to pull out a couple of books to answer this one as well.

ok then, so those numbers would be black?

Tigers in The Mud had photos of his early Tiger 1 and the numbers were dark . I am assuming they were black. I have seen nothing to show that the numbers were later changed to white. I can’t figure why Tamiya used white numbers unless Mr Carious provided that information. Are there any more photos of his mid production tiger out there? Greg.

unfortunately, the only other mid tiger pic is of him and his crew on the tank and in the couplola. Try looking for other tanks in his unit, they would have had the same.
