"Ostketten" on Panzer III L and Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Lang

hi guys,

i have these 2 tank kits by tamiya in 1/35 and am desperate for a scheme which will allow me to use either with “ostketten” - those cool track extensions that were used to cope with snow etc.

does anyone have any ideas as to camo, unit info, and where i would get the decals?
i have lots of spares so all i would really need is some pics to work from.

Kind regards,

Nicholas

ahhh, i think i may actually mean “winterketten”, given what i’ve just found on Axis History Forum:

"…This looks like the 'ole Winterketten and Ostketten confusion again, eh? Well here is some help to tell the two apart:

Winterketten

Winterketten were developed in 1942 for use in winter conditions on the Eastern Front. These were basically a normal track with track extensions that protruded from the ends of the tracks. These are recognizable by the long triangular extensions. These were usually found on the PzKpfw III, PzKpfw IV and StuG III but could also be seen on Hummel, Hornisse and other vehicles.

Ostketten

Ostketten were developed in 1944 for use in the muddy conditions in the Spring and Autumn on the Eastern Front, the Rasputitsa. These were basically a wider track than the usual track which was fitted. There were no triangular extensions, just a wider track. These were for use usually on the PzKpfw IV and StuG III but could also be found on other vehicles. When seen on the PzKpfw IV it looks like a PzKpfw V Panther track on a PzKpfw IV…"

so now we all know, can anyone help???

yeah, i guess i’m going to be whitewashing whatever!

any pics you may have would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Nicholas

Here is a Ausf L of the 19th Panzer Division at Kharkov;

Here is an M of Das Reich;

You’re really pushing the envelope to get a photo of a Panzerjager IV L/70 in these shoes. I don’t remember seeing any photos of such, with these tracks, in the last 35 years…[sigh]

thanks ever so much!![:D]

that pic of the L was just what i was looking for.[bow]

now, do you know what colours and/or markings that tank would have had?[:0]
would it have been whitewash over grey, yellow or a yellow based combo scheme?

i’ll ditch the Jagdpanzer idea now and go with the Panzer III…you’ve been a star![:)]

kind regards,

Nicholas

The color plates in The Battle of Kharkov, by Jean Restayn show Das Reich and Totenkopf Ausf L and J’s in overall grey with scruffy whitewash. I would say this photo is the same. A side view of either this vehicle or a similar 19th Pz Dv Ausf L, shows large turret numbers with open black stencils. No divisional markings can be seen. Standard size black and white crosses.
This photo looks like it could be scribbled chalk for the whitewash, either that or it is heavily worn.

thank you once again…i’m off to ebay to buy those winterketten now![;)]

Regards,

Nicholas

just had a thought, if i wanted to do a tank with numerals on the side like the M in your 2nd pic, i would have to convert my kit.

does anyone know how to convert a Panzer III L to a M? are there conversion sets out there?

N

oh no, your picture server must be down and i haven’t saved the photos!! can you help?

please???[:)]

N

come on didnt you check back [}:)]

Jon, you probably have pics, you have links for everything. [:)]

Sorry, I’ve been out of town and sick to boot. [xx(]
Ron’s site, where the pics are, is up, but is moving at a glacier’s pace. They were moved out of upload and I got tired of waiting for the page to load. I’ll try back a little later, assuming I’m still functioning…[yuck]

They’re back up now…[:)]

Hello, please can You (or any one else) show us some more pictures or colur plates from this book? This would be great help for the topic I´m interested in very much… Thank You very much for Your help! [bow] [bow][bow]

These are examples of Ostketten, correct?
