This model is a pewter sculpt from Games Workshop. It was based over a conglomerate plaque, and is painted entirely in acryllics in the Non Metallic Metal (NNM) style that is currently in vogue among pewter miniature painters. Basically, it means there is absolutely no metallic paints anywhere on this guy.
Humm. Nope. That is no naked pewter on the weapons. It is all Citadel and Reaper acryllic paints. The entire figure was primed white and covered in them.
Light reflections and shadows on the armor plates, axe and gun where painted using different shades of greys to simulate the way light would hit on a real metallic surface. the secret lies in using color gradients that go form very dark to very bright, and that are as smooth as possible.
NMM is a time consuming technique, and when not done right, it can look as if the weapons were made of stone or ceramic, instead of steel.
It is pretty much the same technique 2D artists use to render metals in a painting.
Thank you all for your comments.
Errex you do beautiful work! I am not familiar with the paint brands(been out of things fro many a year & just getting back in), where are they available? Also what types of brushes do you favor? - brands and sizes - any Favs? Huck
Reaper and Citadel paints are available at some comic shops, Games Workshop stores, and some outlets online. I have but a few paint pots of Vallejo, but Vallejo model Color and Vallejo Game color are the best paints out there.
As for brushes, I favor Windsor and Newton Series 7 and Series 11 brushes. Those are pretty much the best kind of brushes one can get, but I find that any round sable brush of reasonable quality works just fine.
A good selection includessizes 1, 0, 00, and , for those really small details, size 000. A good No. 1 flat brush is also a must, for the ocassional drybrush job.
Errex thanks for the info, I will have to get ahold of some of those paints to test them out. I had heard that the Windsor & Newton brand was the best…so all I have to do know is save up my pennies.[^][^]
Thanks, Huck.
great shadowing, i got to get started on some of those small figures any good net site that sell them cheap ? their is not a store around here that sells those
This is a Games Workshop miniature, and since GW has managed to wipe out almost all independent online retailers for their minis, you’d need to order directly from their sites (http://www.games-workshop.com)
Ok, I finally figured out how to post decent sized pics. I updated the original one and added a back shot of it. Just click on it to see a close up of it [:D]
