After opening the trunk on one of my model cars, I thought “this car would look really awesome if I could open the doors.” I know this is probably difficult, and will take a good deal of scratchbuilding, but I really wanna try this to “spruce up” my cars. Could someone give me instructions on how to do this? I think I have a basic idea, but I don’t wanna mess up this model. Also, pics would be EXTREMELY appreciated. (I guess I’m more of the visual type[:D])
I’m not sure how to exactly go about it so i would’nt want to miss lead you but here is how to make working latches, that should go pretty good with working doors.
DDR,
A few years back, I made a diorama of a 1995 Virginia State Police Caprice Classic, sitting in the middle of a downtown street, drivers door open, and the officer standing in the opening, talking on his radio, while looking at a drunk crawling in the street in front of him.
I removed the door from the body using a new (sharp) hobby knife, heated over a candle. The same process was used on door section of the interior tub. I used pieces of spru between the inner door and interior upholstry to get the proper spacing, then used embalmers restorative art wax to make the door end, coated with super glue and painted. I used a thick piece of spru to securly attach the door to the car, then modeled hinges to give an authentic appearance.
Do all the “finishing” work before attaching the door to prevent accidental break off (and the pulling out of your hair).
You can use the same wax/glue/paint technique to fill in the open door spaces on the car body as well. I’m sure there are other affective techniques, but this provided satisfactory results for me.
Happy modeling![:)]

SCale Auto did a article on that very thing a number of years ago. I have it, email me your name and address, and I will copy it and mail it to you.

I have a whole article on opening doors. The author uses dental floss to run down the door seam to cut out the door. Very interesting article!
I saved the webpage, but I can’t find it again on the web. Pass me your email address and I’ll attach a copy of it back to you. You won’t be dissapointed!
Good luck

DDR - You got the trunk open. Won’t the key also work in the door?[:D][;)]
Sorry, couldn’t resist.[:)]
