Thanks for the great response to my first post. There is one more reeeeeeally obscure movie I forgot to mention. Its called Death Race. Its with Doug McClure and Lloyd Bridges. McClure plays an Allied pilot in North Africa who’s P-40 is shot down. After making a controlled landing, he is challenged by a fanatic panzer commander played by Lloyd Bridges. So begins the Death Race, whereby the pilot taxis and hops his Warhawk, trying to escape from the crazy Nazi and his tank. I saw this as a kid, and even at that young age I was pretty well informed about WW2 weapons. As I remember the tank was a Sherman with German markings. Maybe It was an Israeli M51. The P-40 has always been my FAVORITE warplane. So, for a Sherman and P-40 fan, this movie is great fun. Sadly, I can’t find it anywhere except on a video site for about 150.00---- too rich for me! Anyone have any ideas where I might find this video at a better price? Let me know. Its really hokey, and most likely historically inept, but good fun nonetheless… And there is one other movie for tank and P-40 fans. Most of you should know about Spielberg’s 1941, with John Belushi as Wild Bill Kelso, a truly deranged P-40 pilot out for Japanese blood in the skies over Southern California just after Pearl Harbor. Also in this really fun flick is Dan Akroyd playing the commander of an M3 Lee tank. Included is a great scene where the Lee runs through a paint warehouse and gets drenched in a rainbow of paint! Again, lots of great angles of my other favorite tank. Cheers!
I loved 1941 great movie. Couldn’t even tell you my favorite part as the whole movie is good beging to end, Never heard of the movie your talking about but sounds pretty good. Did you try Borders I have gotten movies there real cheap about 3-4 months ago I picked up Attack force Z (very young Mel Gibson) for 3.99 Belle and Blade wants like $29.00 for it,just a sugestion…
John
Tye best part of the 1941 movie is when Dan Ackroyd gets hit in the head and begins reciting technical manuals ,then he has a nylon over his head wuth two orange’s in it and say’s “eeee look at me I’m a bug” killer funny like the whole movie…

" Let me hear your guns ! "
Funny movie— love that one! too many good parts to list…
Buddy , that Death race is an obscure one! Being a 90 minute made for TV movie it’s amazing anybody remembers it! IMDB had this info.
Here’s one while we’re at it–a pretty awsome WWII film I’d NEVER seen on American TV–but British Mates we’re tellin me about it and I sought out a copy from Amazon

Sam Peckinpaw’s only war film (usually known for his very bloody westerns) Lots of dramatic action on the Eastern Front and little too much insight into the hearts & minds of the German fighting man
Death Race. Seen it twice. Years ago. Enjoyed the Warhawk strafing on the ground only to hop over the tank at the last moment.
Indy, they used to show Cross of Iron on TBS all the time back in the day. Yeah its a cable staion but it was standard on most stateside US Army posts in the 80s. Thats where I first saw it… great film.
Thanks or the response. Yeah, Cross of Iron is pretty good. The whole look of the film is really compelling. And I’ve been a James Coburn fan since I saw those too cool flint movies, again as a kid. Whew, too much TV for this fella!
The book was better!
In the movie "Tobruk"they shoot down a P-40 as I recall.Another thing I remember about that movie is that when they blow up the fuel dump at the end there is a American Autocar fuel truck in the yard.
I always thought A Bridge Too Far had some great tank footage. Lots of them to be seen.
While not exactly tanks, 1952s "Red Ball Express"has alot of GMC deuce and a halfs.
Great movie, Red Ball Express. Sure like to see some of those big Mack trucks in 1/35 plastic, or how 'bout the Diamond T rigs? About the Movie, I’ve been a Chandler fan for quite a while. Too bad he died so young after finishing Merril’s Marauders.
A thing about the M-3 in “1941” is that it is actually a Sherman that was converted to look like an M-3. Spielberg tried to borrow an actual M-3 from a museum but they wouldn’t part with it. Does any body know if the remake of “Sahara” with Jim Belushi that was filmed in Australia had an original M-3 or was it converted like “1941”?
Man I was thinking of this movie about a week ago. I remember watching once or twice as a kid. I couldn’t remember the tank. Thanks for setting that straight.
Don’t know about the tank in 1941, but that Sahara remake was one of the best remakes I’ve ever seen. The script is very close to the origional, some parts are even word for word the same. And I loved it when the S.A.S. arrives towards the end in their kitted- out Jeep. Great stuff!
Cross of Iron I think is one of Sam Peckinpahs greatest flicks. The movie great. Now I have to watch it.
Bob
Yep,I sure would like to see more WWII trucks in 1/35 scale.Speaking of Jeff Chandler, theres another movie he was in "The Lady takes a flyer"or something like that where he is a pilot ferrying surplus Warplanes after the war.
