OKay on my F4F-4 Tamiya wildcat,it syas on the paint chart:XF-18:3 + XF 2:1…What does this mean!!!Can anyone explain it good enough for a 12 year old(me)ro understand?
Hey Nick. No need to panic. That means the ratio of paint to mix in order to make a certain color. In this case you need to mix 3 parts of XF-18 and 1 part of XF-2. One way to make it easy is to get a couple of eye droppers or pipettes. Make a mark with a majic marker or Sharpie every 1/4 inch along the dropper/pipette. 1 mark = 1 part, 2 marks =2 parts and so-on. Then all you have to do is measure the amount that is called for in the instructions. Then just dip the tip of the dropper/pipette into the paint and draw in the appropriate amount to the mark for each paint and mix 'em up. Use a drop or two of thinner to help the paint mix together better and more evenly. [8D] Clean the pipette/dropper right away to keep them good for future mixing.
Nick - that is exactly what youy need to do… UNLESS you arent using Tamiya acrylics… if you are using MM or another brand either there might be another mix or they have a color specifically for it, no need to mix… whiuch part of the Wildcat are ya painting with that color? I miay be able to give the color in a different maker…!
Thanks guys…
TOM-I am painting the fuselage, the one that says A: VF-41(aboard USS Ranger)
All the colors are XF-18:3+XF-2:1,and XF-19:2+XF 2:1

blackcat
Hmm I might be wrong but that sounds like Non spectacular med blue and nuetral Gray.
on the box art is it a lightish blue on top and gray on the bottom?? If it is Model Master makes those colors Already.
I would still suggest mixing colors because its a fundamental skill for model making and one you should sharpen… either way you will be fine.
Neutral grey is more of a USAAF color then USN please correct me if Im wrong. The colors he listed xf 18 med blue and xf 2 white should be close to USN blue grey FS 35189. Light grey FS 36440 on underside. MM does make these in both acrylic and enamel 4847 for acrylic and 2055 for enamel. Personally Ive never been happy with MM acrylic the colors seem dull, limp, lifeless and yucky. I have been mixing Tamiya for the last year or so and its all I run through my AB anymore. Hope this helps at all.
Try:
www.aircraftcolors.com
I’ve ordered a couple to try.
Anyone tried them?
I have wanted to give em a try but just havent got around to it let us know what you think please.
ive got the instructions for this kit in front of me, and i bought the tamiya paints yesterday.
The top colour is blue gray the under surfaces is light gray.
you might want to keep those instructions handy if you choose to paint tamiya F4U4 corsair, becuase for some stupid reason it list the same colours as AS19, AS20 and AS8 which, according to their tamiya spray for aircraft is intermediate blue, navy blue and insignia white but those codes dont corrospond with any tamiya paint numbers available (in australia it seems anyway)
By using the paint codes given for the VF22 (uss independence) on the wildcat cat you can figure out that:
AS 19 = XF-18:5 + XF-2:4 = intermediate blue
AS20 = XF-17:5 + XF-8:3 + XF-2:2 = navy blue
AS8 = XF-2:10 + XF-55:1 = insignia white
hope it works out for you
the aircraft colors that oscar deuce mentioned are wonderful to spray… they really do produce a great finish…
but I stray… yeah USN grey/blue over light gray are what you are looking for… MM makes them in Acryl and Enamel - enamel is MM 2055 Navy Blue Gray, MM 2038 Light Gray… I dont have the acrylics to give you number off them but the enamels worked well.
If you spray mostly acrylics look into that link OscarDeuce gave, or go to www.greatmodels.com and get ya some! You’ll be impressed either spraying or brushing either way!
I know this thread is really old, but I’m hoping that the person that posted this quote can tell me how they figured out how to convert the AS paint numbers over to XF paint numbers. I’ve been having the same problem with my Corsair. I’m glad a came across this post. Can anyone shine some light on this topic? How do you convert colors. I’m using all Tamiya paints through my airbrush, but do not want to use the spray cans a.k.a. AS 19, AS 20, AS8. Thanks so much.
Try this site for colour conversion information.
http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/colorcharts.asp
I use it all the time, as it’s a life saver when dealing with Tamiya colour call outs.

LOL I doubt he’s looking naymore. This thread is 3 years old. Haven’t seen nick around here in near that long either.
Tanky, just realised how old this thread was when I saw Tom’s post.
Still maybe the kids a slow builder![:D]
Karl
Hello Karl & Tanky,
I’m the one that kicked this thread back into motion. I’m sure he figured out his model by now. Please see my question above and see if you can help out. I’ve been to the site you reference quite a bit, but it doesn’t tell you how to mix Tamiya colors. I’m looking for a reference chart that tells me how to mix Tamiya Acrylics to match their AS paints. So far I have found nothing. I thought it was interesting though that a person earlier in this post knew the correct mix to create some of those AS colors. If he knows, then this information has to be out there. If it doesn’t, I think I might start a thread and start having people add to it.
Centurion, not sure if this helps at all:
http://tamiyausa.com/articles/feature.php?article-id=72
or this one:
http://www.modelsforsale.com/catalog/tamiyapaintcharts.php
I’m not aware of any direct comparison articles such as on the IPMS Stockholm site.
Karl
Hey Karl,
I’m not really looking for a comparison chart, but more of a conversion chart. I started a thread here /forums/954631/ShowPost.aspx that will hopefully help in gathering this information from other members. If you know any, please let me know.
Thanks,
Burt
