Official Saab 75th anniversary GB - Nu öppen!

OK, this may be a bit of a niche interest outside of Skandinavia, but I’ll be building something for sure before the end of the year, (once I’ve caught up on other GBs… [:$] ) so here goes! 2012 is the 75th anniversary of the founding of Saab. Who’s up for a group build? There have been several new kits recently released, (Tarangus & AZ Models) and there are older kits to be had of course (Heller, Airfix, Italeri, Hasegawa, Special Hobbyetc etc).

The only real rule is that it has to be a Saab aircraft, in any markings. Any interest?

It’s a go!!!

Grab your badge here. I couldn’t resist including the world-famous Swedish Chef, just to remind us all that this hobby is indeed supposed to be FUN!!!

GB runs until the end of 2012, Saab’s 75th year. Any scale, any markings etc so long as there is a Saab under there somewhere. Crossovers are always welcome.

Expected builders below, a small but hardy group, just like the Vikings! (…but with better hair…)

  • VanceCrozier - 1/72 JAS39 Gripen (Italeri)
    VanceCrozier- 1/72 J-21 A (Heller) - COMPLETE, page 28

  • sub revolution -

  • Gamera - 1/48 Viggen (Airfix)

  • taxtp - 1/72 Hasegawa Draken

  • Sprue-ce Goose - 1/72 J-21A (Heller)

  • The Navigator - 1/1 homebuilt Tunnan

  • bsyamato - 1/72 Airfix Viggen

  • Kugai - 1/72…… Gripen, Viggen, or Drakken

  • Theuns - 1/72 Italeri JAS 39 Grippen / SAAF - complete, page 21

Some options…

I have lobbed the idea of a Sweedish GB out a couple of times now. Gotten modest response in the past, but not enough to make a real GB around. I love Sweedish aircraft and would jump on this faster than you would believe! Maybe it will take off this time…

Hoping so - I’ve got 6-7 in the stash. I’ve really been taken with them recently, interesting & unique machines. Either way I’ll be building something this year. Maybe if we can round up a small gang, we can put together a GB with a fairly short timeline, to make sure it stays busy.

Vance, Vance why must you tempt me!?!

Yes, I too have a Saab in the stash (1/48 Airfix Viggen) but I need to start another GB like I need another hole in the head. Will be watching though, and if you do need one more entry I’ll consider jumping in.

Cliff

Hi Vance,

I’d like to register my interest. I’m not sure that I can give you a 100% commitment at this time, but at least you know I’m interested.
Cheers

Tony

Does this GB invitation include FSM forum members who are not BIG SAAB GROUPIES ?

sub revolution - I’ll be happy with a “small but determined” crowd. Even if it’s just a handful of interested parties I’m going for it. (But a small group probably should have a fairly short timeline, we’ll see what happens for #s)

Cliff, my radioactive friend! Come on… you know you want to!! We may need to hold off on starting for a little bit anyway until a few more builders are rounded up, I know I’m tied up for awhile yet myself.

Tony - see above! Won’t be starting immediately by any means but I’d love to get you in as well.

Goose Goose Goose… No, one does not need to be a BIG SAAB GROUPIE, but you do need to have an appreciation for meatballs, seafood, IKEA and all things Saab.

Mmmm…Ikea meatballs… Sorry.

Eh-hem. Back to the Viggens, Drakens, etc…

Thanks, Vance. Good to hear.

However, I am hoping Lutefisk is not on the menu, perhaps I am not a BIG SAAB GROUPIE…

I must say, those clever Swedish engineers have demonstrated that the French do not have a “lock” on making interesting vehicles.

Ahhhhh good to hear! I’m not much of a fan of Saab cars, meatballs, Ikea, ABBA, or blondes…

And don’t even mention the Lutefish [+o(]

However; yes the Swedes do make some of the coolest aircraft in the world.

And I will admit to once and awhile to having fantasies where I’m a badass Viking…

Don’t forget the Tunnan!

That was taken in my driveway the other day before heading to the Lair [;)]

I’m with Cliff in all words!!

but in 1/72

If the -gb will run for a year i’m sure in!

Very cool, the Tunnon is cool looking but I love the looks of the Viggen and Gripen. Just really great looking planes. And you have to appreciate such a useful ability to operate from short runways and poor conditions.

Nav - my agents tell me you have plans & supplies to build another 1:1 Tunnan for the back yard - any truth to the rumour?

bsyamato - resisting the urge to start another one? I’ve got two of those little Viggens in the stash, one Heller and one Airfix boxing. I really like the look of the 2-seater as well, plan on doing one of them that way. Am I crazy for considering the 4-colour splinter pattern in 1/72 scale?!?!

Gamera… you keep hanging around here, you know we’ll pull you into this GB!!! [;)]

I believe those milkshakes give you courage…

I’d do darn near anything for a couple of milkshakes!

.even fly in a classic “finger four formation” ?

I’ll agree - long as it’s a chocolate milkshake…

Ah heck Vance, go ahead and count me in [;)]

I want to try the old '80s splinter camo on my 1/48 Viggen.

Alright, I’m convinced we can make a go of it. Small but determined is good with me, we may pick up a few stragglers too. Now… timeline & start date? What does “start now, finish by end of year” sound like?? (I’m so democratic!)
