For Christmas I got Pat Hawkey’s book “Building and Detailing Model Aircraft” on page 20 he discusses using 5mm nylon tubing (in the book he say the RC guys use it) to make CA applicators by heat it over a candle flame an pulling it apart just like stretching sprue. So I went to Hobbytown today and the only thing they could think of that would like that is this stiff clear rod used for antennas. I bought two piece to try and no matter what I do it breaks very early in the pulling process and is unusable for the CA purpose.
So my question is does anyone know exactly what kind of nylon tubing Pat is talking about in the book?
He is on about the nylon tube type of nylon tubing! Seriously though, I cant advise you where to get it, but it is used heavily in the pneumatics game for air supply & control & is used in the automotive field where is has largely replaced rubber for things like vacuum lines. I would imagine you would have more luck at an industrial supply outfit type place as opposed to a hobby or DIY joint.
I have some kicking around from doing some Pneumatic depositor repairs, but I am a bit far away to “stick it in the post”. Some CA manufacturers / suppliers specifically make & sell the already stretched stuff just for this purpose.
… I’ve used DUBRO control rod sheathing. It costs about 2.25 USD for a 2-foot piece. It stretches well under heat and deposits the finest drop of CA.
I have noticed that various brands of CA behave differently in the tubing. Pink label FLASH from Hobby Lobby works well & doesn’t harden in the tip but the stuff labeled with the local RR hobby shop’s name hardens in the tip overnight
