Hi; I’d like to know if there’s anybody in the northern New York area who is into modeling War Birds. I’ve just begun and have been wondering about some techniques. Is there anybody colse by that I could reach in the future?
I live in Lake Placid, 100mi. round-trip to the nearest hobby shop. You can appreciate my frustration, I’m sure!
Thanks in advance,
Charlie
Hi Charlie!!
I live an hour or so south of you in Saratoga Springs…used to live in Plattsburgh. There was a nice model shop out that way in downtown Plattsburgh…but I heard a rumor recently that the owner died…I am not sure if the shop closed or not.
I am unsure of any shops near you other than that…there aren’t even really too many here- unless you want to head to Hobbytown in Albany.
April 17th in Plattsburgh is the CAN/AM show in Plattsburgh…I’ve never been to a show and plan on checking it out. They’ll have vendors there so I am hoping to pick up some deals…here’s the link:

Welcome to the Forum Charlie. I myself do not have a local hobby shop so I do my purchasing through greatmodels.com and find them quite good to deal with[:D].

Hello Charlie, and welcome to the forum. Although I live in Denver, your New York post caught my attention. I know Plattsburg very well, as a former girlfriend (and still good friend) lives there. Sorry to hear about the local LHS owner passing away. As I remember, he was quite young. (Jeeves, is that the same guy who was also an artist?) I’ll see if I can get some info on the Plattsburg shop.
Why don’t you jump on the ferry to Burlington? Isn’t that closer? Where are you going now on your 100 mi. LHS trips?
Funny, I’m right now in Albany on a work trip, and was just headed over to the mall to visit the hobby shop!

Hello Charlie I live in same area as Jeeves didn’t know about Plattsburgh show might check it out. I’ve traveled to Hobbytown couple times can be a pain I’ll let you know next time I’m going If you need something don’t mind to ship it up. I like to stay with LHS If I can but have used Squadron.com and Internethobbies.com too.
Charlie emailed me last night… said he visited the place on Rt. 29 heading towards Schuylerville…only a few minutes from me…but again-- sadly- the emphasis is on trains there. Hobbytown on Wolf Road in Albany is a great place-- but anyone who knows the traffic on Wolf Road knows how big a pain it is to go there…
He also said the shop in Plattsburgh is still open and that was the one he was speaking of when he said it’s 100 miles…
stinger-- I am not sure if he was an artist…I had only visited the shop once or twice when I was visiting my parents-- he was as I remember a red-haired gentleman- very nice…and the thing I loved about the shop (at that time on Margaret Street) was the upstairs library he had for modelers…I wished the shop was there when I was still living there… I believe it is now located near the Moc Shop on Cornelia-- but I bet Charlie would probably know better…as I have not visited the shop in quite a while.
Hey-- just had a thought! Last summer, my wife and I headed up past Rutland, Vermont to check out the Morgan Horse farm-- and in Rutland I saw what looked to be a rather large hobby shop. We didn’t stop- as this was a wife excursion day and the model shop didn’t fit into that agenda LOL…but I have always wanted to go back and check it out…how far are you from Rutland, Charlie??
Hey-- we should all try and meet up on the 17th… I’ll be the one drooling at the vendor’s tables while my wife is trying to drag me away [;)]
Hey stinger…
What mall and what hobby shop in Albany?? Just curious if there was a new one I didn’t know about…I try and avoid Albany as much as I can [;)]
Beautiful territory up there, though I’ve been only as far as Saratoga and the battlefield park. And in Cooperstown I went for the Farmers’ and Fenimore museums rather than the baseball museum…oh, and the “Museum of the Big Guns” at Watervliet Arsenal–can’t forget that! [;)]
Yup-- the battlefield is great-- in good weather (not lately in other words)-- I ride the 10 mile trail daily on my bike. Great wildlife there as well…there’s even a pair of nesting bald eagles.
Yes, I wished I’d had a bike with me both times I visited…next best would have been to walk it, but I didn’t have enough time for that either.
BTW, I’ve just moved this thread to “General Modeling Discussion” where it might get a little more input (it was buried in the Decaling area)…and of course my post here will ping it to the top of the pile.
