I am looking for North Vietnamese MiG-17 decals in 1:48 scale. I can’t seem to find any. I am looking specifically for markings to match the plane of the infamous Nguyen Toon (Colonel Tomb). I know, he really didn’t exist (or did he[?]…), but the markings for the plane that he supposedly flew are well known. Any ideas?
Aero Master had the decals for MIG-17’s and MIG-21’s of the NVAF. I don’t know if they are still available. It was a long time ago, around the mid to late 80’s. They had Col Toon’s markings for the 17 and 21.
Oh, and yes, he did exist, untill he ran into Showtime 100 with Lt Randy Cunningham and Lt William Driscoll.
AeroMaster stopped making the decals in 1:48 - I called them a while back. Thanks for the info, though. I’m building the MiG to go with my Showtime 100 F4-J. Should be a great display if I can ever get the decals.
If you can find reference photographs, it wouldn’t be too hard to build. A good reference is a book called …AND KILL MIGS by Lou Drendel. It has a B&W picture and color line drawing, showing the MIG-17 flown by Col Tomb. the ID number is 3020 and it looks like it has green splotches painted over NMF. The only other markings are the star & bar on the wings and fuselage. It shows seven kills painted as red stars. The droptanks are left un-painted. If my scanner was working I would send you the picture.
Here is a representation of Col Toon/Toomb’s MiG-17 at the San Diego Aerospace Museum. The colors are faded because the courtyard in which it 's displayed was once open to the elements(Note anti-bird spikes on the fin tip).

The wingtip above the forward fuselage is that of a PBY-5A, also in the courtyard. What’s not shown to the right is the Gods honest actual Showtime 112, which “Duke” Cunningham and “Willy” Driscoll flew to down 2 aircraft. I’ve searched the museums website but could not come up with any close-ups. I’ve got some pics from my last visit and will try to locate and post. If not, I’ll go down on my next day off and get some!
Here’s another shot after the courtyard was covered:

Looks like screen shots. Better color on the MiG. It’s also a good read and it looks cool too!
Thanks guys. I found a few great walkarounds with the correct paint scheme and decals (this one is great http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/AWA1/001-100/walk013_Mig17/walk013.htm ). The ac is almost ready for paint, so I need to decide on colors, but the decals will still be a problem. How difficult is it to make them? Thanks again.
