I’ve mostly been a USMC jet builder but recently I’ve decided I want to do a North American Aviation triptych display for an upcoming show. I like how you can see the family lineage in these aircraft.
I have the F-86 built, and the Fury comes next, so I thought I would complete the set with a nice P-51.
Problem is, and this is where I need some advice, which P-51 in 1/48th scale do you WWII builders recommend? I’ve never built a WWII aircraft and there are 100s of mustang kits out there.
Eventually, I’ll add the Sabre dog, F-100, OV-10 and B1B from my stash to the series, but for now, it will just be these three as they will make a pretty display I think.

You are right in that there are many choices for a WWII P-51.
I’d suggest the Tamiya. They have both the B and D variants in WWII livery, but I’ve only ever built a couple of their Ds. Hasegawa makes a good one as well. I’ve built an Airfix and several Monograms, but I won’t suggest those as they are light on detail. I never built an Accurate Miniatures 'stang, but that one is probably a good kit given my experience with other AM kits. Eduard also has a good looking 'stang in the box, but I haven’t gotten around to building it yet.
Tamiya P-51B
Tamiya P-51D
Hasegawa P-51D
Eduard P-51B

Thank you! Tamya was my best guess would be the answer but I figured I’ve never built an air fix and I hear they’re getting better, so I thought I’d ask around before I just ordered Tamya.
