I know this is beyond the scope of this forum, but I feel it is related, given the context of the subject matter. I just got back from a tour of Normandy. Quite an experience. For all of the movies, books, imagination ect, you still have to see it. I was amazed by the scale of the invasion, I took in all of beaches ect… A visit to the cemetary really opens the eyes. People from all over Europe come there to tour the area, so even in off season it is busy.
Alot of people fighting in a little area no bigger than maybe Rhode Island, amazing. The scope of the effort blew me away.
Let those sacrifices not be forgotten.
Wow, that must have been a great experience!! Some day I hope to get there myself. Did you get to roam the coutryside much? I’d love to see it for reference sake.
I was fortunate enough to be there for a 45th anniversary event. I agree that the cemetary overlooking Omaha Beach is a sobering place. All the white marble grave markers are mind numbing to behold.
I had a West Point history major with me and he took us all through the different beaches. Followed the paths that the breakout took. There was some nasty terrain to assault.
Amen brothers! Let us not foreget their sacrifices and those of our soldiers today. God bless all of our miliatary personnel ! This country needs to show its appreciation for all of you more, thats why i thought i would take this opportunity to say thanks again to all of you .
ackman, I also envy your trip to Normandy. There are two places I can only hope to see someday, and that is Pearl Harbor and Normandy. Each time I see something on television or read about the battles a tear comes to my eyes. We should never forget the participants, not only at Pearl Harbor or Normandy, but of all the battles, small or large, that have allowed us the freedom we enjoy.
i went to Normandy last summer. truly a sobering site. the cemetery was just beautiful, and yet so sad at the same time. and point-du-hoc was incredible too. did u get to see pegasus bridge in the british sector? theres a really great museum there. the Normandy country alone is worth the visit, let alone the great historical importance of the region.
Definately on my must list someday. That would be quite awesome to look down the beaches and envision our boys coming ashore under intense fire. Must have been some sight that day.
Would be cool to visit Normandy, the only ‘battlefield’ sites i’ve visited ouside the UK (its difficult NOT to visit an historical site here [:D] ) are Goose Green and the Mohne dam. You can watch all the documentarys and read all the books you like but theres nothing like actually seeing the places.
