Non-matte clear coat

Today I learned that satin =/= semi-gloss. I guess I knew that already, but forgot.
Had previously used Tamiya semi-gloss for decaling, but tried Army Painter satin finish. Ah well, not even close, although seems like a good finish for scale armor. Hoping it will turn out to be suitable for decals…

Satin is a bit less shiny than semi gloss. Many clear Matt coats in my experience are a tad bit closer to satin in finish than a dead flat finish.

I find Vallejo Matt Varnish to be almost satin- to the point where I don’t use it for matt finishes. I prefer AK Ultra Matt instead. However Vallejo’s Satin Varnish usually does a fine job- I tend to use this in order to have a nice surface for weathering and decals. (AK’s satin varnish is decent too.)

I really like the Alcad clear flat,it’s really dead flat.

I like to use Vallejo satin varnish as a last step for all of my aircraft. It goes on great, and provides a durable finish. Very realistic sheen to. If I want something super flat, good old Testors Dull coat.
