Having recently returned to scale modeling, I see there are a number of ways to achieve a NMF. I think I want to go with Alclad II, or maybe SnJ. Swanny’s how-to on Alclad sure makes it seem like the way to go. Any recommendations/opinions?
This is for the RM P-51D I’m working on. Will be in Miss Marilyn II scheme. Also, the instructions list the green portion as “Medium Green 42”. I saw that testors has a medium green with a FS # (which I forgot), are they the same thing?
I believe Alclad II is tough to beat for a realistic NMF, but that is of course just one opinion. In regards to your inquiry about Medium Green 42, my references list it as FS 34092 European Green.
I’ll go with Alclad as well. However, I tried the MM metalizer paint (aluminum plate) and it works well also. I was pleasantly surprised. Comes in a rattle can though, have to be careful with it.
This question comes up quite a bit, and of course everyone has their personal preferences. I like the Floquil metals, Old Silver, Bright Silver, Platinum Mist. The only prep I do, is to try and remove all the scratches. I’m happy with the results most times.
Alclad2 is my favorite, but I still use the Floquils now & then. SNJ went OOB, but has recently returned with a new owner. I haven’t tried any from the new source, but I always found the original to be a bit grainy.
I’ve used both and had good luck with them. With SNJ you can get thier polishing powder and polish different panels as seen on 1-to-1 aircraft also you can get an almost chrome look by painting parts gloss black (enamel) and polishing the part when dry to the touch. The down side of SNJ is its short shelf life and messy polishing powder. Alcad II is also good and alot cleaner to use comes in different colors of aluminum, brass etc. Down side Expensive especially when doing different colored panels.
Marc, my info was found on an ipms stockholm color cross-reference chart. I had to do a doubletake because it seemed a bit odd, but it did indeed cross-reference medium green 42 to FS 34092. There’s also a very interesting write up about it in the following link…
