I found a paint scheme and decal set for a Ki-61 Tony that really caught my eye so decided to pull out my old Arii 1/48 Ki-61. When these kits were new they were ahead of their time with complete engines and lots of engraved detail and rivits. Even today they can build up into some very impressive kits. Starting this project I’m working on the front office, the dash features Mike Grant Instrument decals and some slight modification to the joy stick. The reflective gun sight is from a left over acetate detail sheet that came with a Ju-87 set.
I was thinking to build this ‘in flight’ or just ready to take off. The canopy would be closed up and I needed a pilot sitting in there. The kit pilot was horribly lame with body parts way out of proportion so I took a standing Japanese pilot figure from the Hasegawa Pilot set and modifed him to fit in the cockpit. In this shot you can see the stock Hasegawa figure at left (the set includes three of each figure), the modified figure seated in the cockpit (he has already been checked for head clearance) and the original kit figure at right.
Once I get to the exterior this will be an excersize in Alclad 2 and tinting Alclad 2 for fabric effects. There’s going to be a fair amount of red paint involved also.

Nothing special, just a sludge wash. Was not going to spend a huge amount of time in there as it is going to be all closed up anyway, just some hints of being busy.
