Hi all, I’m heading over to the USA for a holiday next month. I’ll be in New York for a few days and was wondering what (if any) modelling stores and/or related tourist traps are worth a visit. I don’t really want to buy anything in particular (well, I do have an Iwata HP C+ on my list of things to buy), but it would be nice to see what a flagship modelling store in the Big Apple looks like. Also, if there are any military museums worth visiting or similar in New York, that’d be worth a look if I can find the time. It’ll be my first trip to the US and am getting pretty excited. Just a few steps from Times Square is a basement level railroad/model shop that is … unique.
I can’t recall the name right now, but you’d look for a sidewalk sign board, the sound of a train whistle and then go down a flight of narrow stairs and there you are.
It is far from a ‘flagship’ store, but it is interesting. Decent enough selection of kits and RR stuff, but price$ are high for the US. I can’t remember if they had any airbrush stuff.

If you’re ever on Long Island (adjacent to New York City), there’s the Cradle of Aviation museum in Uniondale that you could visit. And then (again, if you’re on Long Island at any point) theres a large hobby shop in Mineola, Willis Hobbies. But that’s if you’re ever on the Island, I’m not sure about the City.
Tojo - thanks for the reference. I want to see the USS Intrepid Museum, but had no idea what it was called. I’ll put that on my list.
Dre - i’ll definitely have to check out the Red Caboose too. Whilst I don’t have any railway models, it’s on my list of things to do one day and I really do enjoy checking those products out when I can, even if it’s only to eyeball.
Best of all, the Red Caboose is two streets away from where I’m staying, so it won’t be a problem to get to.
Mikey - thanks for the tips. I’m not sure if i’ll make it to Long Island - is that hard/far to go from Manhattan? If I have time I might try to fit it in.
