New to Military modeling (collecting)

Hello all. My name is James. I, like many, grew up building automotive kits through out the 70’s and 80’s. Mostly Mustangs. Never once did I give any thought about building planes, ships, tanks, etc. As I got older, I also got away from building. Life always gets in the way. Marriage, kids, mortgage comes first.

After I got married, I found out my wifes grandfather was a WWII veteran. He rarely talked about his time in the Army but I did hear a few stories. He was on a L.S.T. and was there on Utah beach on D-Day.

The last couple of years, I have watched, read or visited museums on war history. The L.S.T 325 is only a few miles from my house and I have been there several times.

So I guess you can say WWII history is my passion. I have purchased several kits to build. The (stash) contains mostly ships for now: 1/350 Tamiya Missouri earlier WWII kit. 1/350 Trumpeter Essex, Revell LSM, and a LST. I also have aircraft kits including an Academy 1/48 B-25B Doolittle raid, 1/48 Revell B-17G and 1/48 Revell Thunderbolt. Also a 1/35 Tamiya M4A3E8 Sherman Easy Eight and a 1/35 Jeep Willys.

I don’t have much as much time to build as I would like as I have only started on one kit, the LSM and the (stash) gets bigger.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. I look forward to hearing from you all and learning more about the hobby. I really want to learn about PE. I have some for the Essex and the Jeep.

Howdy !

I’m with you there, I mostly do German U-boat’s, but I will build anything that “catche’s my eye”. ( Currently working on a 1/48 scale Revell P-61 BlackWidow )

We couldent "BE THERE " when it happened, so building stuff from history kind of make’s up for it. Plus , We can now hold History in our hand’s !

Welcome to FSM.

Welcome to the Forums James! Glad to have you aboard.

You’ve come to the right place. The members here are very knowledgeable and are ready to help you with any questions/problems that you might have. I’ve been building models for 71 of my 77 years. My favorites are WWI & WWII planes followed by sailing ships. But, I also build anything that strikes my fancy and my wallet says OK.

Sooooooooo, sit back and enjoy the hobby. We’re here if you need us.

Welcome to the forums

Welcome aboard. We all have the same problem with the stash, no matter how many we build, it still gets bigger.

Welcome James

You may find in time that you can build a few models at a time- there is always times you are waiting for paint to dry, etc. FSM is a wondous resource!

I’m retired and work on 1/48 smaller planes and 1/72 big bombers. Right now I’m working on a testors B-2 Spirit- it takes a lot of scratch building that I’m learning slowly.

I got my PE experience on a Revell MIG 25, and it came out OK, but it gets better the more you do it.

I’m in Ottawa, ON

Rick
