As the title says, this is a comparison of the old (1974) AMT Galileo shuttlecraft to the new R2 kit that just came out.
The new kit is listed as 1/32, the old kit is listed as 1/36. For such a close scale the 2 kits are very different sizes!
I’ll just post photo’s next to each other.
First the boxes, The new kits box is MUCH larger than the old kit:
And it fills the box!
The instructions are about the same size:
The decals are obviously much bigger:
Although, when watching “The Galileo Seven” it shows the Columbus as the number 2 shuttle. Here the choices are
3,6,or 9.
Ok, what everyone has been waiting for, The Parts!
The new kit has many more parts, even without the interior. The new kit parts are of a very high quality!
The new kit is considerably larger:
Well done Jamie and R2! Thank you!
That looks a lot more difference than 1/36 to 1/32, which ought to be–per my calculator–0.125, an eighth larger.
12 inches at 1:36 being 0.3333333 inches, and
12 inches at 1:32 being 0.375 (3/8) inches
Which gets us back to the problem of AMT building the studio prop, but not to any plans. SO, perhaps R2 went and found one of the restored props and actually measured it.
It will probably scale better with the available ST figures out there.

R2 used the restored “full sized” prop as a reference.
One problem is the full sized prop is considered to be really 3/4 scale.
I would trust that the new kit is really 1/32 scale and the old kit, that is off in just about every way, is closer 1/45.

Indeed it does!
2 guys over at Hobytalk have already finished it!
Both said they started out test fitting parts, and one thing led to another and it was built.
They say the fit is outstanding and the thing almost builds itself.
