I’m new to this forum. I have been a model maker for around 25 years and have always built aircraft and armour. Recently I’d grown a little tired of the subject matter so fancied a change.
I’ve always been fascinated with the story of RMS Titanic and, as we just moved to a Victorian house, I thought I’d build a large scale model of her to compliment the house.
After some research I chose the Academy 1/400 kit and also purchase Eduards etch set to go with it.
Anyway, I have a few pictures of my build so far. All critique is welcome as ship modelling is very to me. I’m mostly concerned about the rigging! I’ll upload them as soon as my membership trial period is up.
If you’re interested to see my progress so far, I have a YouTube Channel where here is a video of the fist part of this build. You can get to it here - http://www.youtube.com/c/DanDondeModelling
I’d really welcome any advice and things to look out for when buildign a ship.
Welcome to the mad house. Lots of help available if needed. When you are able, post upa thread in the ships page with a work in progress (WIP). You will have quite a few followers.
You asked for it ! All you will get here is helpful hints and about five thousand years of ship modeling spread out amongst us . Nah ! not that much , But we certainly will share our knowledge with you . Welcome Aboard ! Tanker - Builder
It just seems so complex! There are plans in the kit which aren’t exactly that clear. I’m not a rivet counter by any means but I also want it to at least look correct. I’ve a feeling I’ll utter some rude words during the riggin stage. Do ou use CA to fix the rigging points or any suggestions in keeping it taut?
Dan, a lot of guys use EZ-line or fly fishing line for the rigging, I prefer stretched sprue myself. I can vary the size of it from thick to the width of a hair.
Yes you attach whichever product you use with CA.
As far as references for the rigging, I will look up pictures of the subject. I have found the rigging changes as the ship goes through upgrades, however for the Titanic you should be able to find a vast amount of reference pictures. I don’t worry about getting everything perfect, unless it’s going to a museum no one will know the difference.
Thank you. I’ve noticed some rigging changes in my research but having not built a ship before I’m still a tad overwhelmed. I’ve got plenty of building left to do before I reach that stage but thank you for the advice and you’re so correct, it needs to look ‘right’ not be a museum quality!
