Eduard is bringing out a product that should be very welcome to us WWII USN aviation modelers: a carrier deck base in styrene and 1/48 scale:
I think there have been resin bases occasionally, and printed decks. And back in the day, there were some makers who made the toughest detail to replicate-the tie-down strips. Those are long since unavailable. This is a godsend for us and our 1/48 scale Navy planes.
It’s labeled as the deck of an Essex-class carrier, but I think it will work for the Yorktowns, too. Not for the Lexingtons, though; their decks had a different pattern to its planking.
That will be great for US Navy aircraft modelers. A long time ago in the days of the old Squadron they sold some resin bases for 1/72,1/48,& 1/32 aircraft and even one or two for armor modelers. They were called “Moments in Time” by True Details.
Hi, Mike! I haven’t used the ones I got yet, but the detail is very finely engraved and should paint up nicely.
I like the size, too. I expect that I might cut one down to rotate the deck planks out of parallel to the sides of the base, for visual interest. At around $12.50 apiece, it’s a bargain.
But it’s in 1/48 scale. I don’t know of anyone who makes a 1/32 scale deck in styrene. There might be some resin products out there, or printed. And Eduard could certainly bring this product out in the larger scale, too.
Yes, that’s correct, Stik! Eduard first released this in 2001, and discontinued it some time after.
Yes, it certainly works for the Yorktown or Enterprise when they still had the pre-war livery, as well as during the war.
