Hi! I recently purchased the new Dragon Porsche Tiger I and was wondering if Cavallier has plans to make a zimermit set for it. I’m itching to build it but don’t want to have to canibalize an Elepant and Tiger I zim set to do it. I know that it’s a very new kit but has anyone heard anything?
I’m all thumbs when it comes to doing it via pastes, putties, etc. I’ll have to wait if nothing prefab’d comes out soon.
Hi, Sorry, you’re right tigerman, for some reason I was thinking Tiger II. I have one of DML’s Tiger II kits back in the closet that I need to get a set for. Like chazsmith, I am waiting for a set for this new model as well. This is a very nice kit so I hope it won’t be too long coming.
Have to read that one real careful, so used to seeing that terminology used for the Porsche KT! I haven’t done any research on the Tiger I (P) but did it have zim? I know there was only one produced and it fought at Kursk, but I don’t know if it was built and issued before or after the Zim order went out…
Hi, The pictures of the Porsche-Tiger I shown in " Combat History of Panzerjager Abteilung 653" definitely show this one with the Zimmerit on it.
There is a real good Zimmerit job just posted on the Missing Lynx in the Constructive Comments section on this model with Zimmerit added to it and this one looks really good too.
Hi, Was just looking through Tony Greenland’s Panzer Modeling Masterclass book tonight and happened to see a couple photos on pages 65 and 106 of this builder’s old Italieri kit made up in the prototype VK4501(P). It’s painted in the Pz. Grey and has a few changes on it from the modern version by Dragon, but it’s an interesting change from trying to do one with Zimmerit on it. Just thought I’d pass this along.
Sgirty,
Not to be picky, but the unique thing about Dragon’s kit is there was actually only one Tiger (p) that actually went into battle. To be historically correct, there isn’t too much deviation you can do with that kit.
The most obvious difference between the dragon kit and the prototypes ( Italeri’s ferdinand tiger) is the turret. The prototype actually had a bump in the top of the turret to make room for the gun. The Tiger(p) that went into battle was refitted w/the turret that was used on the Henscel Tiger (no bump). They also converted it with maybach engines and pulled out the engine system that was designed by porsche.
Don’t mean to step on any toes, I just happened to come this information and thought I would pass it on. It is interesting history though.
Hi, Build 22: You’re quite right here about that extra ‘long bump’ up on the turret’s top and also by the photos in Greenland’s book there appears to be an escape hatch on the side of the vehicle up by the driver’s position. Don’t know if there’s one on the other side or not for the radio operater/machine gunner, I assume maybe there was. Not to mention the tools on the sides in different spots. And probably a couple of other minor differences as well. But thought I would just mention it as a general alternative to building the regular kit for now while waiting for a set of resin Zimmerit to come out on the market. It would be something of an interesting alternative to this new kit.
Also just for the record - I usually am not as well informed about most models, I just have happened to do alot of research on this one. Kinda like your expertise with the T-34
There were actually 5 VK-4501(P) built before production was halted, only 1 of which, (tactical # 003), was issued to the s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 653’s staff company as a command vehicle in the Spring of 1944. The other 4 were used for training and testing at Dollersheim. The maintenance company of the 653rd made several modifactions to the VK-4501(P) before it entered sevice. This included welding a extra armor plate around the hull MG and welding a shot deflector over the top of the driver’s view port. Extra radio gear was also included as this was a command vehicle. This vehicle was reported as a total loss during the retreat of July/August of 1944.
