Need Tips For Mounting Aircraft to this Airfix Stand

Want to mount my 1:48 F-18 to this stand and need advice on cutting the whole in the plane underside - size/technique etc…Don’t want to mess it up! Thanks all.

  1. Measure and scribe the area to be cut out.

  2. Use a drill bit to begin the holes. I would use 2 holes, one at each end of the slot.

  3. Use an x-acto blade to trim out the rest of the rectangle.

You should probalby do all this before you assemble the fuselage, in case you need to reinforce where the stand will attach.

Thanks Cdn Colin! I wish it wasn’t already assembled! Maybe a dremel to help cut gently?

Oopses can happen fast at high RPM. I would turn a drill bit by hand or in an x-acto handle or pin vice, then carefully expand the hole with a blade, test fitting frequently.

Got it. Thanks again.

I adapted this Tamiya Ki-84 to fit on an old stand. It had a square top, and my plan was to use part of the wheel well to support the stand.

Sorry, I don’t have any in-progress pictures.

I second the recommendation on drilling the hole before you put the fuselage together. I would make a small hole with a pin vise, and then expand with an X-Acto and then get it to final size with a small woodworking file. After that weight the base on the underside with some glued in washers (unless it’s already weighted) and then add a bunch of CA to hold the post in place. Good luck!

Great job on that Ki-84, AV8R! Every time I see your screen name, I immediately think of a Harrier…

Thanks Groot. What is the abbreviation CA?

Nice. Mine worked out. Used a drill (slow speed) to make the two holes - actually 3 and connected w exacto.

‘CA’ is ‘cyanoacrylate’, or ‘Super Glue’.

I’d even have drilled holes along the length of the slot, to remove as much of the material as possible, then cleaned it up with a hobby knife and a small file. In the case of adding the slot before assembly, a file is sufficient to make the slot, I think.
