need some feedback on my shermie

ok, here it is. i think that i made a pretty big improvement on what my first pics were of. i still have to add the machine gun and anteannas. so, critiques anyone?

that fat white star on the side of the hull looks like bait for my 88.hehe throw some mud on there or as mentioned earlier a light o.d. overspray.i concur that it is very quickly turning into a real gem.

i think what i am going to do is apply some mud on the sides like it was applied by the crew to cover up the stars. did allied crews do that? i know german armor hand painted or wiped mud on their crosses to hide them. although i don’t think the crews would paint anything on them for fear of patton chewing their [censored], but wiping mud seems reasonable…

Quickly into the Normandy campaign, many units painted over their white stars. Use dark OD. It’ll be a nice touch.

so you say paint. do you mean like they airbrushed it on, or hand painted it on? and they would probably have painted both of the stars on the sides. but what about the one on the rear? would they leave that one there for identification? or was the luffewaffe still up and going at that time?

roosterpelo,

WOW! Fantastic job! Take a well deserved bow. On your improvements, I’d go [tup][tup][tup][tup][tup].

I’d use mud to cover the star. If the tank wasn’t in a service depot, they’d use whatever was handy. Mud, quick, cheap, and readily available. Paint would be fine also, but in light of your weathering job, mud (in my opinion) would be a nice touch.

YOu could probably indicate either (sprayed or brushed) – I think I’ve seen the brushed over type more often in photos.

By the Normandy invasion, stars weren’t placed on the engine decks given the awareness that crews covered them with gear and kit. Stars were on the top of turrets if at all. The flourescent air ID panels were de rigueur for Allied vehicles in NWE.

Air ID was important to avoid friendly fire from Allied aircraft and for aerial artillery observers. The Luftwaffe made occasional forays but given the “blitzkreig” nature of tank warfare after Cobra, air ID was essential.
