Need help

Hello all, I’m getting back into scale modeling after 20+ years. I am currently just starting a 1/48 scale Revell P-47N Thunderbolt. The instructions call for Chromate Yellow Primer - FS 33481. I am using Model Master enamel paint on the model. Testors, does not make a Chromate Yellow Primer any longer. I can’t find this color anywhere through other brands. Does anyone know of where I can find some or, what colors I could mix to make something close? Also, the entire tail section of the aircraft is painted in Yellow - FS 13507. Apparently, Testors doesn’t make this color in military color anymore either. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hello Firefighter,

Welcome back to the hobby and many thanks for the job you do everyday.

Esentially, Model Master paints are the same mfg. as Testor’s and you can find them in either acrylic or enamel. just a tip; yellow comes out much better and has easier coverage if first you paint the area with flat white. Airbrush spraying is your best bet with MM paints.

Testors make Fl. Zinc Chromate.

Model Masters zinc chromate yellow is 4851 in acryl and they also make it enamel. You can find these at many hobby stores and Hobby Lobby usually has it.

Testers “Interior Yellow” is chromate yellow. You can also mix 2 parts flat yellow with 1 part flat green. Zink Chromate green and yellow shades varied greatly in the factories depending on the mix at the time, so just about any greenish yellow would look about right. There is no standard Zink Chromate Yellow color.

Testors Model Master FS33481 is Yellow Zinc Chromate. As far as Yellow FS13507 goes, you can use either Chrome Yellow which is also known as RAF Trainer Yellow.

Testors makes an enamel chromate yellow in the small squared bottle.

I like to use Tamiya XF-4 yellow green for yellow chromate primer.

I am building an XP=47H, a conversion kit using a Revell P-47 kit ofr wings and tail. When I saw that yellow chromate callout, that seemed strange, and I was needing to gather references anyway, so grabbed shots of P-47 interior, wheel wells, etc. Now, I know photographs are not super accurate on color replication, but those shots sure look to me like the green chromate! I am intending to use Testors Green Chromate.

The colors also depend upon which factory the 47 was built at! One used yellow zinc., while the other used green zinc.

Both colors (or at least a fair representation) can be mixed using Olive Drab and Yellow. For green zinc…OD and a little yellow…for yellow zinc…yellow and a little OD.

I built the Academy “N” a few years ago. I used regular zinc chromate in the gear pits and cockpit based on reference photos:

Sovereign Colourcoats also has a designated zinc chromate yellow.

A distributor in the US is:

I’ve ordered from them recently and their service was very good. It’s also a very good brand of paint.
