I was curious if I could mix Model Master flat and gloss coats to get a semi gloss coat finish? It’s for my bf-109 I am working on. I know that the German planes didn’t have the dull flat finish thar the american planes did, and I don’t know what to use as a final coat. What do you guys do? I don’t want it too flat but I also dont want it too glossy. I hope I am making sense here
Is there something out there that I can buy that is in the middle or do I mix gloss and flat to get a semi-gloss? [%-)]
any help or comments are appreaciated, thanks!
As long as they are the same type of coating in your case Model Master lacquer I don’t see a reason why that would not work. All you’re doing is diluting the flattening agent in the lacquer. They also make a semi-gloss pre-mixed if you don’t want to take that chance. I use the MM flat lacquer over a good coat of Future. Light mist coats and you can control how flat is gets. A light buff with a nice old, soft cotton T-shirt or undershirt can take some of the flat away too.
I would take a hard look at the particular aircraft you want to do. RLM paints were semi-gloss when freshly applied but often faded to a matte finish with age.
Don’t worry about the final finish until after your decals are on and all other weathering (with the exception of chalks) is done. Use some Polly Scale clear flat or Floquil clear flat (they are exactly the same thing) and you will get that dull finish you are looking for. Remember to leave all your masks on the clear parts until you finish the flat coat. Take a look at my website (link in signiture) under the Tools and Tips section for more on weathering and dull coats.
