I’m building an old MPC 1/24 scale Hawker Hurricane MKI and want to paint it in its “Battle of Britain” camouflage paint scheme. The paint “colours” (I believe) are
Dark Green Topside and Medium Sea Gray Bottomside. The interior is cockpit interior Green. What I would like to find are some color equivalencies similar to what the Accurate Miniatures kits offer. FS numbers for approximations and perhaps actual paint numbers from Humbrol, Model Master, Tamiya etc. Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Dark green is Humbrol 30, while Dark Earth is Humbrol 29. Don’t remember about the grey…!
hi wklmodel, and welcome to the forums!![:)]
[#welcome]
i tend to use either tamiya or pollyscale (both acrylic) paints myself, so i’m not big on humbrol numbers, but as far as i know battle of britain hurricanes should be “sky” underneath, and not the medium sea grey which came along a bit later.please correct me if i’m wrong here guys?[:p]
tamiya’s number for this colour is XF-21, whilst pollyscale do “british sky type s”, ref F505254. the 2 colours are a little different, although i think they’re trying for the same thing if you get what i mean!![:)]
hope this helps.

nick
If you can get ModelMaster paints (squadron.com sells them), they have the correct colors all mixed for ya :).
BoB colors were dark green and brown topsides, with sky type S undersides. Pre-BoB and partly into it, some planes had day/night undersides, wherein the belly was sky, but the bottom of one wing was black. To my knowledge, the light sea gray undersides were not used until after the BoB.
See my Tamiya Spitfire for BoB day/night color example:

hey John P[:)],
just took a look at your spit…and what a beautiful looking bird she is too!![bow]
i thought the background Union Flag was a nice touch as well; makes me feel all patriotic!![:D]
thanks for sharing the pic; i’m particularly interested as i’m doing the same BoB spit at the moment, in alan deer’s day/night markings[8D].
happy modelling.

nick
Have you decided on a squadron and particular aircraft? Email me or post up and I’ll send you a profile if I have it…
Jeff Herne
PS: Dark Earth, Dark Green, and Sky Type S, and, as stated before, some had one wing painted flat black.
Thanks to everyone who offered information on the colors. I have just returned from my local hobby shop with a good supply (2 tins each color) of Humbrol 28, 29, and 30. I like the color tones.

Humbrol 29 and 30 are ok for the topside camo but as mentioned by others the undersides are ‘sky’ - Humbrol H90 is the one you want.
At 1:24 it may be worth considering using H163 in place of H30 which is going to be a little on the light side for the upper green.
although theres no actual plans for the scheme the colours used with each model can be found on …
www.airfix.co.uk
theres only one 1:24 Hurricane in the models list and its still a Mk1. The H28 grey you have is mentioned in the list but for what, i’m not sure.
i’ve got an origonal colour guide for the model so if you need any other help i’ll dig it out for you.
hope this helps, a kit like that is worth getting right.
