I have an Airfix AWACS kit that I want to mark as an American aircraft- the kit comes with the proper parts for the American version except for the decals- any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance
Richard Douglas
You can try www.combataircraft.com to see pics and a colour drawing of the AWACS. As far as decals go nearly any US markings in your scale (is it 1/72, 1/100 or 1/144th?) will work. If you are doing a particular aircraft, pick a time frame because there have been several variations in the tail markings. Some have no airbase designator on the tail, some have it, and some have had it then had it removed. The proper airbase designator for the E-3s I’ve seen has been OK. These are the ones based at Tinker AFB, OKC, Oklahoma. I have seen one with OF on the tail and this is out of Offut AFB, Nebraska.
Well, I am am building in 1/72 Scale and was interested in a Late 70’s to Mid 80’s paint job.

Rick,
Don’t know of any specific for US AWACS.
Did get some good pics of the current version at Hill last month.
There are a few others on the site if you are interested:

Philp, that bird belongs to the 552 AEW & C Wing out of Tinker AFB, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They visit fairly often at the airport where I work on weekends. Majors Field is home of a large electronics specialist organization called L-3.
Kevin,
This was probably the most popular plane on the field that day. They had it opened up and the line stayed long all day. Didn’t get in it myself.
AK for Alaska.

The US E3’s do have a different engine than the NATO ones so you may have to do some rebuilding to match the Decals you get. As far as I know thats the main difference between them both other then the US does’t use the refuling probe either.
Well, the kit does contain the US engines and Euro engines so that shouldn’t be a problem.
The photos are helpful, thank you - guess I am going to have to try my hand at printing my own(gasp!) decals. Does anyone know where I can go to find the correct FS numbers for the paint scheme?
Richard
The kit I bought only had the one set of engines. I would have prefered the US version. It may be time to hang anothe E3 from my celling. I have a 144 scale US version. The 72 sacle takes up a lot of space though… Maybe I can remove my wifes craft table lighting to make it fit… just a thought.
Hey Dave,
I have an idea- if you haven’t built the 1/144 scale one yet could you scan the decals and send it (the scan)to me via email. I have Adobe photoshop and I can scale the scan up. As far as replacing your wife’s craft table lighting… well, that’s on you ![]()
