Ok, first off I know next to nothing about NASCAR. However, I am a huge fan of everything US Coast Guard. I have seen advertisements and even toys of a Coast Guard race car. I want one!
Like I said I know nothing about race cars so I have no idea what to search for. I am looking for a model kit of the Coast Guard car. Google is overwhelming me with NASCAR info that I just cant seem to parse through.
Can one of you fine folks help find this particular race car. All I know is its #21 and its a Monte Carlo SS.
Oh, and I just found out there are two # 21 a Coast Guard and a Coast Guard Reserve car or is it one with two paint schemes? Ahhh! . You see! too much to digest.
NASCAR has become a spec racing series, all the bodies are essentially identical except for decals and a few details. This new car is called the “car of tomorrow.” I have heard that one of the major mfgs is coming out with a COT model, but have not seen it yet.
There is a guy in Milwaukee area that offers resin bodies of the COT. You buy one of the older kits to use chassis and wheels, with the resin body.
Then the major challenge would be getting the decals. NASCAR is asking ridiculous fees for licensing decals, and many of the aftermarket companies who once made decals no longer make current NASCAR decals. There are a few left, mostly smaller garage shops. Don’t know of any that specifically make the CG car.
I’ll try to find the name of the guy that makes the COT bodies but may not be able to help much on the decals. Maybe someone else can help there.
Excellent! I guess once I find the body I can attempt to make my own decals. I dont know how that would turn out. But, I wont know unless I try, right?
FWIW: While I have no knowledge on the CG car I can tell you that CG and CGR livery would be the same “team” car as long as the number was the same. They can repaint/adorn a car between races and teams have more than one car anyways. When you see the number 21 on TV or live, it could be one of four or more cars they regularly choose from based upon tracks they are running at.[;)]
Again, FWIW, that CG/CGR can change which “team” runs with it through the years. It seems they were with the 21 team a/o 2006 but it has appeared on others too? But here’s the CGR livery while on the 21 car- it’s a diecast collectible:
For what it’s worth, in the February 1991 Daytona 500, during the height of Operation Desert Storm, there were five cars marked with “We Support Our Troops”, one for each service.
The #71 Coast Guard car was a Chevy Lumina, driven by Dave Marcis. Decals for this model were made by JNJ, a long time ago. You can probably find a set for sale someplace.
If the thread starter finds those decals all he would need is an older Nascar model. No aftermarket resin body to mess with- just something he’d be needing as a donor kit anyways. It would still represent his Coast Guard desires.[Y]
It appears that mikesdecals.com is going to be my one stop shop for this little project of mine. I can get the decals and cars. All I need is a little more research before I place the order.
