I am building 3 NASCAR racers. #24, #48 and #20. I need help finding paint for the bodies .
#24 and #48 are Dark Blue Metallic. I did a search @ Tower and could not find this color in any brand.
#20 says Gloss Orange. I painted my Dukes of Hazzard Charger this color. It looks darker than what is on the box of the #20.
What paint do you use for these models? I can use airbrush or spray can, though I prefer spray can. I use Model Master Enamels, but will try anything at this point.
On a sidenote, how do the decals stand up to the body color showing through? I’m guessing the entire body is painted blue (or orange) and the decals take care of the rest, right? The instructions are lacking.
Here is my progress as of a couple of days ago. I have since progressed to the drivetrain.
Those engines look really good. I’m building an older #6 Viagra car now (insert joke here) and I was wondering how you got the detail to pop? The 2 engines on the right seem to have more depth and detail than the one on the left. I’d like to include more detail in my car now but I am still (re)learning this hobby. Again, great work on those engines.
I am an airplane guy, but like to venture into cars, boats, motorcycles as a change of pace.
You’re right about the engines. The last two have been “washed”. It is a common practice in the model airplane world. Basically, it is watered down black paint that is brushed on then just let it dry. The bottle says “acrylic craft paint”. I’m guessing any water-based paint will work. Some builders use thinned oil paint, but you have to be careful or it will remove the existing paint. The water-based stuff lets you start over if you mess up. If you look closely, one of the chassis has a wash applied also.
Try http://mcwautomotivefinishes.com Look under their racing colors. Hope this helps. My favorite site for aftermarket stuff is www.rocketfin.com Scroll down to the links at the bottom of the page and have fun.
I decided to go with the Tamiya spray equivalents. It’s good to know I wasn’t the only one with this problem. Thank you all for your help and the links.
I am finished with the chassis. I am waiting on the paint to arrive.
