Name that plane...

I have 2. They could go on anything, 1st “Holy Moses” (my band is MOSES)

#2. would be “Hammer of Thor”(we have a song and album titled that, the song is based on my brothers experience in Iraq, Bro’s call sign: GOAT; Squadron call was DEALER)

The call goes out

The sirens sound

The engines whine

The devils growl

GOAT is flyin, flyin high tonight

DEALER deals, a deadly strike

HAMMER OF THOR, smashing the ground

Another dose, of death tonight

and so on…

I’ll try and get a pic of the cover art up this weekend

Hmm, good thread!

I’ d put this on the side of a P-47- my mom used to say this to me when I was younger and stupid: Don’t Come Cryin ta me! Big red and white cowling checkers with a painting of mom sweeping Focke-wulf’s under a rug with a broom.

That, or maybe something simple like ‘Gabriel’…the archangel smiting his foes…an enticing thought…

Cheers,

-Chris

It was common with all tail-draggers…

Nice names everyone! Keep them coming! I gotta tell ya, I really appreciate the personal stories also. Theres so much history we dont know about and am thankful of their sacrifices for my freedom.

If I was to fly a jet it it would be the A-10. I would name it after my wife. I would call it “Nanette’s Nightmare”.

I would like to do that as well except Idont have the skill! Could you explain how you make your own if you have a chance? Thanks!

This one’s easy.

“Suzy Bear” After my daughter Suzanne.

Regards,

Jeff

I’d call my bird “Myself” - that way, if I ever got shot, the enemy pilot would have to tell all his buddies “Yeah, I just shot myself”. And they’d all be thinking he was some kind of idiot, because really, how do you shoot yourself in a plane?

-Fred

I’d name my UH1-C “Donnie’s Revenge” for my cousin Maj. Donald R. Schwartz Jr. (USMC Ret.) who died one year ago tomorrow. He served in 'Nam and was shot down in Hueys; wounded; many commendations; he is credited with helping to found the Marines “Toys for Tots” program. He was my crazy cousin and I loved him…miss you cuz!

I might also put the name “Schwartzies Sermon” on an A4 Skyhawk two seat trainer. He took me to NAS Weymouth (MA) before one of our family reunions back in the 80’s. Well the Skyhawk had an RTO and he made me wait outside his office while he chewed out the maintenance crew (masking tape had been found on the pitot probe after a maintenance cycle). I’d never heard my cousin yell like that before or after…made quite an impression on me, as a young aeronautical engineering student. Made me realize that the smallest details can cause the biggest accidents and I carried that philosophy throughout my engineering career.

Rest in Peace cousin! [angel]

You can use an ink-jet printer to make your own on decal paper… I just make mine in MS Paint and print them out, then spray them with Testor’s Decal Bonder…

After reading the two books by Mr. Smallwood, Warthogs and Strike Eagles in the gulf war9something like that) I would call the A-10, ‘Tanya’s Terror’ after my current GF and the F-15E by one of three names we called them whn working on them in Depot maint. ‘Earth Mover’, ‘Mud Hen’ or ‘Dirt Dobber’.

"You can use an ink-jet printer to make your own on decal paper… I just make mine in MS Paint and print them out, then spray them with Testor’s Decal Bonder… "

Great. This sounds easy enough. I will try this after I find some good pics to put on my plane. Thanks.

Easy one for me:

Mine is a OD/Gray B-17G, her name is “Debra Lynn” from a high school crush I had! (hubba hubba)

Other good names

P-47: MARK MAYHAM

F-4 Phantom: LOL

F.1 camel: Woodstock

P-38: Double order of death

MUKAO

4 legs

gives milk

I did this sort of thing with an ex girlfriend’s name.

I got an F-14 Tomcat, an aircraft that developed something of a reputation for being a hangar queen, and named it “Lazy Susan”

I built it after Susan and I parted ways and the name rather explains why she became an ex girlfriend.

If I were to do the project again today, I think I’d call the plane something along the lines of “Round Trip Irene” in honour of a very good childhood friend of mine that I lost touch with for many years and recently reconnected with after 20 ir so years.

I’d probably make it a bomber or transport, Halifax or Dakota most likely, and the name could represent the hopes of the crew to actually make their mission a round trip as opposed to a one way.

I pretty much make up all the names of my model aircraft rather than using the supplied nose-art… That and spurious squadron/group codes and serial numbers keep the possibilities open without having to deal with rivet counters… Although I use a lot of the Varga Girls used by the real Forts, the names are changed to protect the innocent… But then, a lot of the girls showed up with different names and hair color on real Forts and Libs, so…

Currently, my 8th Air Force Forts are:

“Bad Check”. (It keeps coming back)

“Dorrito’s Banditos”. Again the wife, Dorri (her nick-name is “Dorrito” and she’s very popular with m’crew.)…

“Dallas Alice”. My High-school sweetheart.

I did Monograms B17 once and lettered “Impatient Virgin” on the nose…

Old = P-40…“Gotcha”

New = F-18… “One Down”

I remember my dad telling me about an F-100D in his squadron back in the late 1950s that was named “Miss Carriage”. I kinda liked that. Made you think a little bit about what it really meant!

But, I would love to own an OA-4M Skyhawk, and I would name it “Angel-Face”, which is what I call my wife (her name is Kelly, by the way).
