My Panther WIP Update 7-31-09 Done?

Looks like a lot’ta people are (so to speak) “punching out panthers lately”. Apparently you’re in good company too. I look forward to the results.

Not a bad result from your experiment Wayne, I can see where the lifting of the disks would be a challenge in terms of avoiding the scraping. IIRC there was an article in AFV Modeller not too long ago where the builder built a small little template out of punched styrene disks as a way to overcome this particlular problem…have to see if I can dig out that link somewhere.

Tracks are looking good as well!

Interesting method Wayne. Would blue-tape make it any easier? I do think a template would eliminate lifting and marks, but wouldn’t work well over non-flat surfaces, unless it were a little tacky and bendable.

Ok,

Thanks to a suggestion from a member from another forum I have decided on using blue tack. The first round of testing looks promising. I used small pieces rolled into tiny balls. (No jokes fellas) Once placed, I pressed down, and, lo and behold little circles magically appeared!

Photos to come.

The only real issue is the temperature where I live. I keep the house at 78, which on a cool day is still 30 degrees cooler than outside. [:O] The blue tack gets real loose and sticky, it still comes off clean, but I put the whole test piece in the fridge, and it came off well.

Lookin good and im watching and waiting eagerly to see that camo [dinner]

Here’s the blue tack test.

With a little more patience/practice I’ll obtain the look I want.

I like the way this is going Wayne, keep up the experimenting. [tup]

I laid down the random pattern of brown just now. I’m going to let it sit for a day or so before masking.

I’m striving for the pattern reflected in my first test with the labels. Am I nutts or what?

G - Nice work and I love the expermentation…Keep on trying

Rounds Complete!!

EH, hEh, HEh… I am “so” predictable.

But yes, it’s looking really promising.

agentg,

would it be possible for you to show a colore chart or even better a picture of the scheme you are trying to achieve?

As allways

Looking good so far Wayne, I like the idea of experimenting your schemes on scrap parts first, Not too sure I understand the exact finish you are trying to achieve on this one but I wish you the best of luck, I’m sure you will have any problems sorted out well before you actually touch the kit.

Terry.

Terry,

The “disk camo” pattern is one that is a variation on the “ambush” scheme. DML’s box art for the Grille M has this pattern featured for example. It’s the one that Wayne is trying to replicate on his Panther.

Thanks Bill, I’ve been googling images all morning but couldn’t find one that adequately conveyed what I’m trying to accomplish.

I see the photos and immediately recognize the pattern but I hesitate to post them.

Here’s one on a JagdPanzer. You have to look close, but it’s definately the disc camo.

Yeah Wayne, got you now, great scheme. Maybe if you you punch a pattern into some light plastic or heavy paper and spray straight through the pattern keeping the template close to the model it might work better. I think Gary Edmundson done something similar in his Osprey book on the SIG 33.

Another thing I remember being told some years ago by a fellow club member is that if you are using adhesive type masks is to try applying them to something else a couple of times to reduce the tackiness of the adhesive. Some thing that wont leave too much crap on the mash like Jeans.

I know it will take a bit of trial and error but you will get there.

Terry.

Ok boys and girls here we go!

Dots

More dots…

Paint

It’s moving right along now. Later today I spray the yellow and unmask the entire thing. I’m seeing blue dots everywhere I look!

Almost there.

Paint!

That’s the new barrel thanks to Heater Engineer.

The GF’s family is on the way, so the unveiling will be delayed.

Im lovin it and want to have a go in the near future, thanks for the tute its made me a lot more confident to have a go.[%-)][tdn][:)][tup]

[:O] I can’t wait, it looks like it’s going to be good!!

You’re keeping us in suspense Wayne! [(-D] I’m eagerly awaiting the results…but I must have missed it, how are you forming the disks out of blue tack? They look remarkably consistent and I have a feeling that’s going to be a crucial element to this coming out well in the end. [;)]
