My name is chris and im a plastiholic

so I think ive got a problem, I have been slowly checking out all the LHS around me since I fully got back into the hobby about a year ago. Today me and the ol ball and chain decided to go check out the last LHS we havent seen yet, I told myself to be strong, I didnt need a new kit. I have got an academy 1/72 P-51D that im just about done with a revell 1/48 B-17 at 25% completion and a tamiya 1/48 scale Spitfire Mk Vb still in the stash that im about to start. I walked to to check out the selection, to talk to the folks and just get a feel of the place. then I laid eyes on the academy 1/72 P-40E warhawk…I told myself no, you dont need another one. The ol ball and chain said very clearly (and very loudly) I didnt need another one, but alas I am a weak fool, I bought it and now I have another plane in line that I am just chomping at the bit to get started on. what have i gotten myself into [:D]

I know how you feel. My pile has gotten to the point where I am going to sell off about ten models on EVILBAY. That will still leave me about 20 to build. You are not alone.[:)]

So many beautiful kits to reproduce and so little time, and the more my skill improves the more fun it gets

Just wait until you have 10 or more large storage bins crammed with models in the garage or spare bedrooms and you keep adding to the stash and it keeps growing and growing and…[:O]

Scott

I think I would be beaten into submission by my lovly lady before I was able to get a collection that large…but that wont stop me from trying[:-^]

My name is Larry and I am a bonified if not certfiable plastiholic. My stash will out live me by many years at the rate I am building and yet I find myself buying more. It is an addiction that catches many of us.

I know your pain. But I have a great wife and she supports my hobby with over 300+ kits in tubs in the house and shed I have slowed down a lot on buying. No LHS were I work so most of my stuff is Ebay. And I want to be able to finish what I have on day. J

Maybe some of you gentlemen could help me to understand why you buy so many models when you can buy one or two at a time and do those, then go out and get more?? I have two models…my chevelle and my mustang…then when those are done and only when those are done I am going to go buy another one…is that so hard really? [D)][;)]

Well, you see, Pink Chevelle, there are many reasons for buying ahead of building rate. I have a few more than 2,500 kits, and still I don’t have the EXACT one I may need tomorrow, so those “extra” kits are sort of a “safety factor”. I wouldn’t want to have to wait until Squadron got their shipping out, or heaven forbid I should have to put off building until I got time to go to a hobby shop. As to whether at 60 I might expire before the last kit is built, that’s simply not relevant, as my grandson Ben has proclaimed “he is going to build them all!” Then there is my granddaughter Yasemin, who has posted on the ladie’s group build, she’s working on kit number three. So, you see the person who started this thread is standing on quite solid ground, and really needs a generous budget for model purchases. And don’t forget that a decent surplus of glue, paint, and aftermarket decals are also absolute necessities.

Actually, I’ve realized I enjoy collecting the kits as much as building them. When I get a new kit, I often spend two hours examining the parts, looking over the decals, researching the history of the aircraft. And I also like finding rare kits. So for me it’s not just stashing for the sake of stashing- I enjoy kits in their unbuilt state too.

Hmmm?? He/She who dies with the most kits on hand… wins. [:D]

If Mr. Priest ends up with as many kits as you guys have, he will die! Our budget and the room in our house cant handle it. Baby! Build the kits you have!!! Love you.

This is why I am selling off about 1/3 of my kits. Budget and room seem to be major factors. After that I will be down to about 20 kits.

However I have my wife working on a corvette for the powder puff GB, so now she seems to have a better understanding of the plastic addiction.

Pink, I gave you an answer up above that of course was a bit in jest, though what I said with regard to number of kits and grandkids is factual. I would have to say that when I was younger I never let my kids go without due to what I spent on cars, models, or flying full scale aircraft. I have known people who have done otherwise. Whatever we do, the proper perspective is always necessary.

What sometimes seems foolish, sometimes is not. Before I was married, I bought a used 1965 Jaguar E-type (This was in 1969). The first thing my father said when he saw it was “Can you take it back?” It was a stretch at the time to buy it, but I’ve never regretted it. I owned that car for twenty years, and sold it for 4 1/2 times what I paid for it. The same proportions have held true for some of the kits in my collection. I wish I could say the same for what I have owned in the way of business assets!

It may seem hard to look at the pile of unbuilt kits, but someday hopefully your family will share the hobby (and it is really great that you and “the Priest” share it now!) and in time you will look back on that sharing with the greatest of fondness. There are in fact a couple of models in my display case that were built by my two daughters 25 years ago, and treasure them I do!

I can’t explain it either, Pink. I’ve got 150 or so and I still browse Squadron sales like a man in a desert looking for water. It isn’t just a fault in the male of the species.

HI pink
nice to have a ladies’ perspective…
Perhaps you could ‘explain’ this thing with shoes & handbags?..[:P]

These threads might help!

Some of it is competition, some personal interest, then there is the collectors’ instinct… & some because you really really want to build that item…
Speaking ONLY for my self, I’ve thinned out my stash to stuff I will build, (honest!),
eg sold all my 1/32 plane stuff (but replaced it with 1/48th plane stuff, oops)
& self-imposed limit, it has to be D-day related, OR modern armour/amphibs…
so no cool trains for me… however much I’d like to see them built…
enjoy!

I really don’t consider myself a collector. I’m a modeler. Every kit I buy I have the utmost intention to build that one next. Unfortunately another comes along before I get to the first one and that gets placed on the shelf to be “definitely” built next. And so on and so on!

The way I look at it, modeling is a hobby that keeps me at home. I’m not out chasing women, drinking or gambling. My wife knows if she wants me, if I’m not at work then I’m in the basement. The bills get paid, the grandkids are spoiled beyond belief and the wife and I are both happy with our lives.

Now excuse me but I have to go check out Great Models new arrivals![:D]

A modeler I know died last year and he had in his collection 10,000 kits.

Actually, I don’t have any sort of addiction for shoes or handbags…I buy them when I need them. Maybe I am just weird… The only thing I can think of that I am addicted to is food. [C=:-)]

10.000? That’s a lot!

I never understand why somebody would have the same kit (like the 400 F-4’s) many times over. I have a 100+ stash but no doubles.
